About The Position

This position is intended to provide shipyard exposure to early-college engineering students dedicated to a program of ship design by acting in the capacity of a minimally skilled helper to production trades. Interns are expected to not only contribute positively to ship production and/or repair through their labor, but also to gain/learn insights to benefit future ship design, construction, and/or repair.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be engaged as a full-time student at an accredited Bachelor of Science degree program.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that completion of a shipyard industrial internship is a non-credit requirement for graduation.
  • Applicants must be recommended for the position by college staff in charge of intern placements.
  • Must be available for and sustain an assignment not less than 37 nor more than 65 working days (including orientation).

Responsibilities

  • Will be placed in a production trade/organization in new construction organization Steel, Outfitting, On Board, Test and Trials trades or in similar positions in the Repair department. Specific trade/organizational assignments will be made by NASSCO.
  • Job duties will consist of assisting skilled trades personnel in the conduct of their discipline(s), including identifying or retrieving in-process material; interpreting drawings, plans, schedules, and/or lists; recording data; and in some circumstances, could include executing limited skilled trade functions.
  • Job duties may also include fire watch, industrial housekeeping, removal or application of equipment protection, and similar tasks.
  • Depending on business needs, availability, and aptitude, may receive limited training in production skills, department operation, and or shipyard integration.
  • May assist stage and area managers with coordination responsibilities.
