About The Position

The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Transportation Planning intern. ABOUT US MARC, the association of local governments and metropolitan planning organization for the bistate Kansas City region, promotes and supports cooperation on regional issues, including transportation, the environment, our workforce and economy, aging services, community development, quality early learning, public safety communications and emergency services. MARC has a collaborative work environment with a culture based on integrity, innovation, diversity and inclusion, excellence in performance and service leadership. The Transportation & Environment Department provides support to committees charged with establishing transportation goals and policies, and planning and programming federal funds for the metropolitan area. ABOUT THIS POSITION The Transportation Intern may work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours a week during academic breaks and the summer. Daytime scheduling will be flexible.  Occasional weekend or evening event work may be required. This internship will span from May 2026 through the end of May 2027 with the potential for extension. The Transportation Intern position is a hybrid combination of in-person work at our Kansas City, MO office and remote work.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with internal staff, citizens, and outside organizations.
  • Analytical abilities required to integrate and interpret data from various sources.
  • Effective writing skills to summarize data accurately and concisely.
  • Knowledge of the principles of research, standard statistical procedures, sources of planning information, and techniques used in the preparation of materials for presentation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Current student enrolled in a degree seeking program
  • Reliable transportation to Kansas City office at ~3 times a week for the duration of the May 2026-May 2027 internship.
  • Educational and/or past work experience in urban planning, engineering, geography, public administration or a closely related field.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and meet the driving requirements for company insurance guidelines, including valid driver’s license. Must abide by driver eligibility and vehicle use requirements including a driver license background check through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference given for experience in transportation planning, statistical analysis, database management, and geographic information systems (GIS).

Responsibilities
