About The Position

The Student Office Assistant student staff are expected to be a positive representative of CCE using professional verbal and written communication skills while communicating with multiple audiences and supporting CCE’s equity, diversity, and inclusion principles. The student staff will be expected to meet with their supervisor weekly as well as demonstrate excellent time management, project management, and multi-tasking skills necessary when working independently. Work-study-eligible students are encouraged to apply. The Center for Civic Engagement is located at 300 W. North St., Normal, IL. However, occasional meetings and participation/work at events on campus will also be necessary. The strategic plan for the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) states that the vision of the department is “a more just and equitable world cultivated through the participation of all people in the co-creation of knowledge and collective action.” Its mission is to connect students, faculty, staff, and alumni with local, national, and global communities through meaningful civic engagement to promote the lifelong learning and development of active community members.” In general, CCE is responsible for enacting Illinois State’s commitment to civic engagement and fostering a culture that values and rewards civic engagement. This is accomplished through a variety of programs and services with students, faculty, and staff, as well as in partnership with Bloomington-Normal community organizations. CCE’s work involves volunteering and service-learning, political engagement, and civic education. CCE is unique in that it reports to both the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs. The unit is comprised of 8 professional staff, 2 graduate assistants, and several student workers, interns, and fellows. While each staff member has specific responsibilities, the department operates as a team, and therefore, all staff are expected to support a variety of programs and services. Requirements

  • All student employees in the Center for Civic Engagement must have good academic and disciplinary standing to obtain employment.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Answering the telephone in an informed, professional manner, transferring phone calls to staff offices, answering questions, and directing calls to proper campus resources.
  • Greet guests in a customer-service-oriented, professional manner, offer directions as needed, and assist with requests.
  • Support efforts to enhance accessibility on the CCE website.
  • Perform general duties required to maintain office operations, such as distributing office mail, conducting website checks, helping organize office mailings, electronic filing, typing, working with spreadsheets, scanning, sorting documents, creating and designing documents, keeping the front desk clean and uncluttered, refilling resource supplies, remaining current on-campus information/resources, and attending regular staff training sessions.
  • Provide departmental tabling at events and present general CCE presentations.
  • Present general CCE presentations during Preview
  • Drive ISU Fleet vehicle to bring equipment to tabling and presentation events.
  • Lift 20 pounds of equipment and use a wagon to bring equipment to events.
  • Assist with other unit projects as needed.
