The Boston Public Schools Division of Student Support approaches youth employment as a core student success strategy, not a standalone workforce program. Our model is embedded within schools and aligned with academics, attendance, re-engagement, and wellness, allowing us to identify and support students through trusted relationships with educators, counselors, and families. We prioritize high touch, relationship driven supports and remove barriers to participation by centering equity, access, and student realities. Employment is treated as an extension of learning and development, particularly for students who have been historically underserved, disconnected, or excluded from traditional employment pathways. If chose, we will have a cohort of students that we work closely with throughout the school year. What sets our work apart is a clear, intentional trajectory of opportunity. Students move from early exposure and skill-building into advanced, high-level experiences that emphasize leadership, responsibility, and long-term planning. Our programs are year-round, integrated with athletics, wellness, and mentoring, and designed to grow with students rather than allow them to age out. While other City efforts often focus on short-term job placement, our approach is developmental and outcome-driven—using employment to strengthen engagement, build agency, and prepare young people for sustained success in school, career, and life.
