About The Position

This position is accountable for participating in and supervising the activities of engineers and technicians engaged in the preparation of studies and plans for highway facility improvements.Essential Functions Ensures that studies and plans prepared are accurate and complete, and in compliance with design standards and specifications, and depict the most cost-effective designs for major projects. Coordinates activities with other sections within the bureau and consultant engineers to ensure plans are completed to meet prescribed letting dates. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.  Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Performs other duties as assigned. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Studies and Plans Technician Squad Leader. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years of engineering experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Occasional district-wide and out of district travel with possible overnight stays.
  • Overtime during nights and weekends.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Skill in the design of highways, streets and structures and in making completed engineering plans and specifications.
  • Working knowledge and training in the Open Roads Designer computer program.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental policies, procedures and specifications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff and the public.
  • Ability to supervise the work of engineers and technicians.
  • Ability to assign, review and coordinate work performed by consultant staff.
