Within OMA&D is the College Access unit that implements programs focused on expanding access for underserved communities by partnering with K-12 school districts, two-year colleges, and community coalitions. The UW Upward Bound program has an outstanding opportunity for a Study Skills Instructor. The Study Skills Instructor provides instruction and tutoring in writing for participants in the Upward Bound program. The position support students in writing for college applications, scholarships, and academic enrichment opportunities. Upward Bound is designed to help low-income and first-generation students succeed in high school, enroll in college, and obtain a postsecondary degree. Upward Bound is a federally funded U.S. Department of Education program that is subject to renewal every five years. The Study Skills Instructor – Writing position is complex due to the range of school settings, student populations, and program responsibilities. During the school year, the Study Skills Instructor works at three Seattle high schools—Chief Sealth International, Franklin, and Cleveland STEM. This requires flexibility in instructional delivery, coordination with high school teachers and staff, and the ability to manage logistical challenges associated with traveling between multiple sites while providing both in-person and online writing support. Students have varying academic skill levels. Many Upward Bound students are enrolled in college-level courses through Running Start. The position requires professional judgment to adapt instructional strategies, provide targeted writing support, and make informal assessments to guide interventions. During the six-week Summer Academy at the University of Washington, the Study Skills Instructor teaches a college preparation course, conducts formal assessments, and prepares students for college-level writing and academic expectations. Additional responsibilities include curriculum refinement, SAT/ACT test preparation instruction, and writing letters of recommendation, requiring careful evaluation of students’ skills and potential.
