Within OMA&D is the College Access unit that implements programs focused on expanding access for underserved communities by partnering with K-12 school districts, two-year colleges, and community coalitions. The UW Upward Bound program has an outstanding opportunity for a Study Skills Instructor. The Study Skills Instructor provides instruction and tutoring in writing for participants in the Upward Bound program. The position support students in writing for college applications, scholarships, and academic enrichment opportunities. Upward Bound is designed to help low-income and first-generation students succeed in high school, enroll in college, and obtain a postsecondary degree. Upward Bound is a federally funded U.S. Department of Education program that is subject to renewal every five years. The Study Skills Instructor – Writing position is complex due to the range of school settings, student populations, and program responsibilities. During the school year, the Study Skills Instructor works at three Seattle high schools—Chief Sealth International, Franklin, and Cleveland STEM. This requires flexibility in instructional delivery, coordination with high school teachers and staff, and the ability to manage logistical challenges associated with traveling between multiple sites while providing both in-person and online writing support. Students have varying academic skill levels. Many Upward Bound students are enrolled in college-level courses through Running Start. The position requires professional judgment to adapt instructional strategies, provide targeted writing support, and make informal assessments to guide interventions. During the six-week Summer Academy at the University of Washington, the Study Skills Instructor teaches a college preparation course, conducts formal assessments, and prepares students for college-level writing and academic expectations. Additional responsibilities include curriculum refinement, SAT/ACT test preparation instruction, and writing letters of recommendation, requiring careful evaluation of students’ skills and potential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field and 3 years of professional, full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience over multiple years) teaching students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural experience and backgrounds and students with various abilities and need for accommodation.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Nice To Haves

  • Past TRIO participant, and/or personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those of the students served by the project.
  • Experience with federal regulations and with federal TRIO programs.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills and experience
  • Understanding of partner schools and communities, and Washington state college access programs and college admission requirements.
  • Washington State Teacher Certification and/or Master's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Teach two sections of a college preparation course during the Summer Academy, a six-week program held at the University of Washington.
  • Provide group and individual tutoring at the high schools to assist students with their academic classes.
  • In collaboration with the Upward Bound Math instructor, teach an annual eight-session Saturday SAT Test preparation class.
  • Provide academic support for students that are still acquiring English fluency to be successful in Upward Bound and in their high school classes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with high school teachers and staff in order to advocate and support the success of UB students.
  • Offer quarterly workshops after school on the writing process, study skills, and test-taking strategies.
  • In collaboration with the Academic Advisor, support students in revising and writing internship, scholarship, and college application essays.
  • Using available school data as well as information from student contacts, identify student academic needs and monitor student progress.
  • In coordination with the Academic Advisor, contribute to the individual learning plans of each student.
  • Monitor progress based on UB academic performance objectives.
  • Maintain records of student contacts and provide routine reports for the program database and student files.
  • In collaboration with the UB staff, deliver recruitment presentations at target high schools or in the community.
  • Lead workshops at the new student orientation events.
  • Serve on review group for Upward Bound program applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
