About The Position

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides treatment to patients with a substance use disorder. Works under the direction of a clinical supervisor as required under DHS 75, and works within the State of Wisconsin scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in substance abuse through an accredited program
  • Incumbent must be working toward completing their 3000 hours toward certification, and has five years to obtain these hours
  • Licensed by the State of Wisconsin as a Substance Abuse Counselor In-Training (SAC-IT), and actively working toward the hours required for Substance Abuse Counselor certification
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
  • Job classification is not exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, diagnoses, and recommends treatment using DSM 5 and placement criteria to ensure the patient’s needs are met.
  • Works collaboratively with the patient to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the needs of the patient, desired outcomes, and agreed-upon plan of care.
  • Monitors patient progress by utilizing evidence-based interventions and makes changes to the therapeutic approach based on the patient’s response to treatment.
  • Utilizes facilitation skills including group and individual therapy to meet the patient’s needs.
  • Maintains accurate patient records and documentation to comply with regulation and ThedaCare policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with multiple disciplines to effectively and efficiently provide patient care and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Understands disciplines outside of recovery services and encourages their involvement in the patient plan of care.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and sensitivity to cultural, environmental, and social factors that might impact the patient and treatment experience.
