About The Position

The substance use disorder clinician intern will provide substance use disorder services including screening, brief intervention, brief treatment, clinical substance use disorder counseling and treatment under the supervision of a Qualified Credentialed Counselor. The substance use disorder clinician intern will continually develop the practice dimensions and core competencies of addiction counseling.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree preferred, High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of 270 classroom hours, or 18 semester hours, of collegiate chemical dependency curricula.
  • Complete 300 hours of approved field work practicum.
  • Texas HHSC Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern status designation.
  • Group facilitation and counseling experience.
  • Excellent verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Always maintain high ethical standards while working with clients and be worthy of public trust and confidence.
  • Background screening (from DPS and/or Shields) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain Texas HHSC LCDC Intern licensure.
  • Utilize evidenced based assessments and screening tools to appropriately address harmful substance use, diagnose substance use disorders and assess client’s individual needs, strengths, and barriers.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing techniques during brief intervention and brief treatment sessions to enhance client’s readiness for recovery.
  • Coordinate referrals to treatment and maintain a working knowledge of internal and external referral sources.
  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling services.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.
  • Provide education on the health impact of substance use and engage clients in harm reduction strategies.
  • Maintain a high level of patient engagement by completing the assigned volume of SBIRT screenings within the designed medical clinic(s).
  • Coordinate with clients to develop treatment/service plan goals, objectives, and interventions and evaluate the efficacy of treatment plans while documenting client’s progress towards goals and objectives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services in client’s electronic health record.
  • Attend weekly intern supervision meetings and complete assignments as required by the Clinical Training Curriculum.
  • Maintain documentation of supervised work experience and submit hours for approval on a weekly basis.
  • Attend required training for keeping abreast of new knowledge and techniques related to the practice of substance use disorder counseling and treatment modalities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
