The Substation Wireman is responsible for performing the installation, wiring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems and equipment in substations. This role supports the crew leader, ensuring that all work comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.

Requirements

  • Must have a satisfactory background/MVR check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug test.
  • Understanding both company and client expectations as it relates to safety, quality, compliance and the documentation for projects.
  • Ability or knowledge around conduit bending, cable pulling, crimping, soldering, and cable terminations (e.g., control cable, CT/VT wiring).
  • Available to work on an as-needed basis, with potential short-notice assignments.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Learn and maintain thorough knowledge of protections and control wiring techniques, guidelines and best practices.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • High school diploma or GED; completion of a certified electrical apprenticeship is preferred.
  • 0-3 years of progressive experience in substation construction, wiring, or maintenance.
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 certification.
  • Working knowledge around substation equipment, control systems, and protection schemes.
  • Knowledge of use, limitations, and maintenance of all Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Combination of office and field work environment with frequent travel to project sites through the United States; must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and must be insurable.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime as needed.

  • Experience with power utilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Learn how to read, interpret, and work from electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Learn about material inventory, tools, and documentation required for substation wiring projects.
  • Perform the installation and maintenance of substation wiring and equipment.
  • Participate in all aspects of commissioning work for dedicated projects with electrical/mechanical crews.
  • Install and terminate control, power, and communication cables for substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, control panels, and relays.
  • Participates in the process of identifying and resolving issues with electrical/mechanical systems and equipment during the commissioning process.
  • Assist with the troubleshooting and testing of electrical circuits and components to ensure proper operation.
  • Prepare daily notes for work completed and submits to crew leader for approval.
  • Perform work in compliance with applicable safety regulations (e.g., OSHA).
  • Learn and maintain high standards for electrical safety, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazard mitigation.
  • Stay in compliance with industry standards, codes, and client specifications.
  • Support the safety culture and for safe working conditions.
  • Maintain compliance with all customer requirements and with internal training.
  • Additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support the organization's goals and adapt to evolving business needs.
