About The Position

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities. The Tax Policy, Forecasting and Economic Analysis Task Force is responsible for forecasting and monitoring trends in the local, national and global economies, including tax revenues, unemployment, and population growth. Within this task force, the Tax Policy Group monitors and forecasts revenues from City taxes, including consumption taxes, the personal income tax, business taxes and more. Annually, the City collects more than $80 billion in tax revenues. The property and aggregate revenue unit monitors and forecasts property and property related taxes amounting to over $35 billion and provides the reporting function of all the tax revenue collections.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Applied Statistics, Information systems. Courses outside of these majors are still welcome to apply.
  • Experience (coursework accepted) with scripting, querying, or statistical programming (e.g., SQL, Python). Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Highly organized, attention to detail, self-directed, and intellectually curious.
  • Personable and positive, with a high level of integrity
  • Interest in public policy, municipal budgeting, government

  • Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university.
  • Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required.
  • Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel
  • To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university.
  • As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

Responsibilities

  • Data Management and Development Support (60%): Coordinate, develop, maintain, and improve data pipelines; Support aggregate tax revenue reporting production; Retrieve and query data, ideally via Python and SQL; Perform data reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of data; Review and update current data workflow documentation; Provide technical assistance and support to database end users to help them use data resources effectively and creatively; Enter data accurately in the Citywide Financial Management System.
  • Automated Reporting (30%): Support development of automating various reports, including: Daily Collections, Tax Program Expenditures, Capital Plan, Transaction Tax Collections
  • Performing other duties upon interest (10%) (e.g., forecast evaluation, econometrics in python)
