About The Position

Under the direction of the School-Age Child Care Director, the School-Age Child Care Staff supports the daily operation of the school-age program by providing a safe, nurturing, engaging, and inclusive environment for all children. The position assists in planning and implementing age-appropriate activities that promote children’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development while ensuring compliance with YMCA and state licensing policies.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have completed at least one approved non-credit or credit course in early childhood education (or equivalent) or complete within six months of hire.
  • Must hold current CPR certification or obtain within three months of hire.
  • Must have a physical examination completed within 12 months prior to or 30 days after hire verifying ability to work with children.
  • Must pass a fingerprint-based background check per DCF policies prior to employment.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, enjoy planning diverse activities, and demonstrate the ability to relate well to children and families.

  • Experience working or volunteering with school-age children preferred.

  • Supervises children by maintaining active engagement, positive interaction, and consistent oversight to ensure a safe and supportive environment that promotes participation and belonging.
  • Implements and participates in daily program activities that are developmentally appropriate to encourage children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive environment by modeling the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and teamwork to build character and strengthen community among participants.
  • Encourages positive behavior and self-regulation by applying consistent and constructive guidance strategies to promote emotional development and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Communicates effectively with families and school personnel by providing regular updates and responding promptly to questions or concerns to strengthen trust, transparency, and collaboration.
  • Maintains accurate program records and documentation (e.g., attendance, incident reports, medication logs, safety checklists) to ensure accountability, compliance, and smooth program operation.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and integrity by adhering to YMCA policies, maintaining confidentiality, and serving as a positive role model to uphold the organization’s reputation and standards of excellence.
