About The Position

Develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates district athletic programs for all ages. This position assumes final responsibility for all outcomes within the athletic programming department and does related work within the Athletics, Fitness, and Memberships Department as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of supervision, leadership, team building, personal and professional development and practices.
  • Knowledge of youth and adult athletic programs, league management, youth behavior management, community relations, customer service, knowledge of evaluating and addressing associated risks inherent with industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; established skills in charge management and learning new systems and software; advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite, registration systems and the internet.
  • Effective time and task management skills, team building and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate with all ages; work independently with accountability; ability to use excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, community groups and the public; ability to represent the District in a professional manner within the community; ability to work a variety of shifts, length of shift and days of the week as events and programs require.
  • A four-year college degree in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or related field, and three years of progressively responsible experience in sports, athletics, education, programming, parks and recreation, or a related area which includes working closely with youth and the general public.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a current Frist Aid, CPR and AED certificates.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver license and other AFS/DHS required reporting requirements as defined on the Oregon Registry.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, and five years of progressively responsible experience working in public or private athletic program administration.
  • Spanish speaking is preferred; a bilingual rate adjustment is contingent upon passing a proficiency test.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, develop, oversee, and evaluate new and ongoing district athletic programs to align with community needs. Establish appropriate fee schedules; evaluate programs and activities for participation, effectiveness, and safety.
  • Identify new programming opportunities and community partnerships to expand and improve program offerings to the community.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service, working collaboratively to create a positive experience for staff and patrons, and community members through professional and courteous behavior and effective problem-solving resolution.
  • Manage and assess the environment for risks and correct potential hazardous conditions. Report all work-related employee and participant incidents, and community member incidents to ensure district safety, security, and loss control standards.
  • Train and orient department staff to the job expectations associated with being employed within the recreation programming department.
  • Ensure timely and consistent communication of district initiatives, updates, and key efforts to all levels of staff, keeping staff well informed and engaged.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and on-call status as needed. Provide onsite supervision and program leadership as needed.
  • Represent Willamalane on community-based committees, coalitions and/or task and focus groups per the request and approval of the department Manager.
  • Work with the Fitness, Athletic, and Memberships Program Manager to develop recommendations for an annual budget. Review, monitor, and account for expenditures and revenues within budgetary constraints and cost recovery model.
  • Supervise direct reports, including but not limited to: instructors, coaches, and officials, including assigning hours and/or work; manage timecards, evaluating performance, training, taking disciplinary action, and making hiring and termination decisions; oversee the work of volunteers and contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with district and department policies and procedures, internal processes, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Manage contracts and memorandums of agreement with vendors and partners as required. Manage and pay invoices from contractors and vendors.
  • Provide assistance to and problem-solve with staff and/or participants regarding program activities; respond to a variety of inquiries, problems, and/or complaints from program participants and the community.
  • Provide information to, and work collaboratively with, the community engagement department for program and activity publicity and information for program promotion.
  • Attend, participate in, and lead team meetings and team building opportunities, program orientation, and training, as required.
  • Participate and work with other athletic programs at community, regional, and state organizations to promote and coordinate comprehensive recreation programs.
  • Complete other job-related duties or tasks as required.
