About The Position

Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services. FLSA StatusNon-Exempt Job Role SummaryThe Support Specialist – Acute Care establishes and maintains a safe environment at all times through on-going assessment of milieu environment and intervenes as indicated in the care plan as well as by nursing or physician order. The Support Specialist – Acute Care provides skills training and development to clients as required by medical necessity outlined in the care plan. This position also provides crisis management and emergency interventions including but not limited to CPR and CPI interventions as required by medical necessity and directed by the treatment team.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED plus one year of experience in behavioral health
  • Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in human services may substitute for experience
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license that meets Eskenazi Health’s driving policy requirements

Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health’s values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
  • Embraces, understands, and operates under the Recovery Model, including AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) and the spirit of motivational interviewing
  • Establishes and maintains a safe environment at all times through on-going assessment of milieu/appointment environment and intervenes as indicated in the care plan as well as by nursing or physician order
  • Provides activities of daily living skills training and development to clients in group and individual settings as guided by medical necessity outlined in the care plan for the purpose of promoting independence or maintaining current level of functioning
  • Manages physical and verbal aggression by practicing the principles of the CPI Verbal Escalation Continuum, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention with advanced physical skills, and actively participating in the seclusion/restraint team as a last resort
  • Exhibits patience and tact while interacting with a wide variety of people, often during times of stress
  • Provides other emergency interventions including but not limited to cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Meets the agency’s standard of timely completion of all acute care required documentation according to guidelines for timeliness and accuracy
  • Participates in staff debriefings which provide the opportunity for the employee to process and cope with stressful events, identify opportunities for improvement, and to provide emotional support to each other
  • Monitoring and providing direct care to clients one on one
  • Performs selected procedures including but not limited to performing vital signs, collecting specimens, monitoring nutritional status assisting patients with bathing, feeding, toileting, and other such duties as assigned by supervisor and within scope of practice
  • Meets agency requirements for continuing education
