With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Certified Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. Performs specific tasks to assist the surgical team in ways that values the uniqueness of each individual and addresses the physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of the diversity of patients served by Jefferson Health, and is competent to provide care for all patient populations. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the sterile field. The Technician accurately and efficiently anticipates surgeon’s needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy and surgeons’ preferences. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care of the surgical patient. The Certified Surgical Technician also supports decontamination and sterile supply area, and maintains courteous and professional interactions with the patients and staff. Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values. Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners. Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures. Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting. Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure. Counts all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to, during and after the surgical procedure. Follows the policy on how counts are performed, and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations. Helps maintain a safe, neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room. Acts as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed
