About The Position

At Steven Winter Associates (SWA), were committed to creating healthier, low-carbon buildings, and were looking for a Sustainability Specialist to join our Sustainable Building Services team in Norwalk, CT. As a Sustainability Specialist, youll: Spend ~ 50% of your time in the field, inspecting and testing residential buildings, and guiding teams to meet their sustainability goals. Spend the rest of your time translating complex building science into clear guidance, reviewing plans and specs for performance improvements. Support certifications like ENERGY STAR, Passive House, and LEED. A strong building science foundation is essential. You should be comfortable with thermal envelopes, mechanical systems, and how design decisions affect performance. This is a hands-on, technical role ideal for someone curious, detail-oriented, and eager to grow.

Requirements

  • BS in architectural engineering, building technologies, architecture, construction management or a building-related engineering field.
  • 1+ year experience with building design, construction or sustainability consulting.
  • Knowledge of multifamily mechanical, structural and thermal envelope systems.
  • Strong communicator - written, verbal and presentations.
  • Detail oriented, able to work independently and manage projects.
  • Experienced driver, comfortable navigating urban traffic.
  • Must have valid U.S. driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Onsite experience with construction projects is a plus.
  • HERS Rater, LEED for Homes Green Rater, NGBS Green Verifier or BPI Analyst; experience with LEED, HERS Ratings, ENERGY STAR, National Green Building Standard, or Enterprise Green Communities.
  • Utility billing analysis and energy saving spreadsheet calculations.
  • Energy Code and / or ASHRAE standards.
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat/Bluebeam.
  • Ability to read / review construction drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and test buildings to verify sustainability measures.
  • Communicate building science principles and green building program requirements to project teams.
  • Review architectural and mechanical drawings, specifications, and submittals recommending performance improvements.
  • Prepare documentation, calculations, and analysis for certifications.
  • Conduct research on technologies, programs and/or policies.
