About The Position

The Swim Instructor position is responsible for providing a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all members and participants enrolled in swim class. Each instructor will teach the latest accepted methods by introducing skills in a logical progression, demonstrating correct techniques, and using positive corrective feedback. Instructors are responsible for displaying a friendly, professional appearance and keeping their classes safe and fun.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Current swim instructor certification through The Summit on the Park Swim Instructor Course.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification through a nationally recognized organization.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to chemicals commonly used in swimming pool environments.
  • Must be willing to conform to department uniform policy.
  • Must be able to take initiative, complete tasks, and work without close supervision.
  • Friendly and enthusiastic personality.
  • Ability to clearly communicate procedures, problems, and policies with fellow employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work a wide variety of shifts, including afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays and substitute when needed.
  • This is an "At-Will" position.
  • Work assignments and hours are scheduled based on availability, division requirements and within the confines of the budget.
  • Schedules and work hours are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time due to division needs, budgeting constraints and staff availability.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches the latest accepted swim methods by introducing skills in a logical progression, demonstrating correct techniques, and using positive corrective feedback.
  • Instructs group swim lessons and private swim lessons as assigned.
  • Instructs swim lessons for a wide variety of ages, including infants, toddlers, preschoolers, youth and adults.
  • Maintains a safe environment by utilizing safe swimming practices and keeping all participants in the line of vision.
  • Prepares written lesson plans for each class.
  • Prepares and distributes progress reports for each participant.
  • Provides positive and constructive feedback to participants and their parents.
  • Responds to participants and parent inquiries and neutralizes concerns.
  • Displays a friendly, professional appearance while keeping classes safe and fun.
  • Maintains swim lesson equipment.
  • Participates in monthly swim instructor in-service training and other required departmental training.
  • Based on business need and availability, may be assigned to teach private classes (group and/or adapted swim lessons) at a premium rate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
