About The Position

The Windows System Administrator maintains and supports the organization’s Windows Server and Windows desktop environments, with additional responsibility for onsite deskside support. This role manages Active Directory, Group Policy, patching, system monitoring, and Tier II/III troubleshooting while also providing hands‑on support for end‑user devices, peripherals, and workstation‑level issues. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across servers, desktops, and user-facing technologies to ensure stable, secure, and reliable IT operations. The Windows Desktop/Server Administrator will provide support across the Office of Information Management (OIM) and Office of Science (OSC) mission systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field or equivalent relevant experience; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in information technology, systems administration or other IT related field.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency equivalent to industry-recognized certifications, such as: Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate Microsoft Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA (networking fundamentals) Vendor-specific certifications in firewalls, endpoint platforms, or virtualization
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting, automation tools, and CLI-based administration.
  • Strong knowledge of Active Directory, Windows Server, SCCM/Intune, and virtualization platforms.
  • Ability to support Windows, macOS, and Linux endpoints as required.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain Windows Server environments (2016/2019/2022), including domain controllers, file servers, print servers, and application servers.
  • Manage Active Directory (AD), including user/group management, OU structure, GPOs, DNS, DHCP, and replication.
  • Provide Tier III support for Windows desktop environments, including OS deployment, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • Support endpoint devices (Windows, macOS, and Linux where required), ensuring compliance with security baselines.
  • Implement and maintain Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (SCCM/Intune) for software distribution, patch management, and endpoint compliance.
  • Provide onsite deskside support for desktops, laptops, and peripherals.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving hardware failures, OS problems, application errors, and network connectivity.
  • Support workstation imaging, deployment, and lifecycle management.
  • Assist users with printers, scanners, docking stations, monitors, and other peripherals.
  • Handle new‑hire workstation setups, equipment moves, and user onboarding/offboarding tasks.
  • Deliver clear, customer‑focused communication when resolving issues or explaining technical concepts.
  • Monitor system health, performance, and capacity using approved tools.
  • Identify and resolve system bottlenecks, outages, and service failures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, SOPs, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and long‑term remediation planning.
  • Support and improve Configuration Management (CM) practices in alignment with DOE and industry standards.
  • Maintain and update the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to track Windows servers, desktops, and dependencies.
  • Submit all changes via the OIM-approved change management system in accordance with the Change Control Review (CCR) process.
  • Evaluate proposed changes for technical and cybersecurity risk, ensuring compliance with secure configuration baselines.
  • Perform and document system patching, OS updates, and application upgrades in accordance with OIM policy.
