About The Position

The Distribution Relay Technician is responsible for the technical installation, programming, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and commissioning of distribution automation (DA) devices such as reclosers, voltage regulators, capacitor banks, and switch gear. The position also serves as a subject matter expert (SME) and provides tier 2 support to distribution line personnel.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, computers or engineering OR equivalent work/training in a related field.
  • Associate degree specializing in electronics, instrumentation, computers or engineering, AND at least 4 years of equivalent work/training in related field, OR At least 1 year and qualified as a Distribution Relay Apprentice 4th Year, OR At least 6 years of equivalent work/training in a related field.
  • Know Company's safety rules and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and be willing and able to render practical first aid.
  • Have practical working knowledge of electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Be willing and able to read and understand wiring diagrams and blueprints.
  • Be willing and able to perform routine operations of moderate complexity and variety.
  • Be willing and able to learn and perform the Company's electrical and mechanical tagging rules and requirements for a qualified switchman.
  • Be responsible for Company tools, instruments, and equipment.
  • Have working knowledge of Company’s practices and standards as related to work and satisfactorily complete all necessary and mandatory training requirements associated with the position.
  • Have strength and endurance adequate for arduous labor as circumstances may require.
  • Good hand-eye coordination, physical dexterity, and color vision
  • Acquire and maintain driver's license required for commercial vehicle greater than 10,000 lbs.
  • Pass background check required for CIP certification or other applicable licenses.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition to employment in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety leadership by exemplifying strong safety culture for others to follow.
  • Perform DA device commissioning and complete all required work orders and documentation to ensure data integrity at time of commissioning.
  • Install settings and firmware upgrades to DA devices
  • Perform Troubleshooting and repair to DA devices
  • Ensure proper installation of equipment, i.e.: Control relays, Communication Bridges, and all connections associated.
  • Assist area line personnel, engineering, and DOC as SMEs for issues relating to devices and self-healing networks (SHNs)
  • Mentor Line Area Personnel on data collection, event understanding, proper equipment inspection guidelines along with how to help mitigate small issues.
  • Provide automation training and support, as needed, to local line networks and DOC as needed.
  • Must be a self-motivated, self-driven candidate that is able to work with little to no direct daily supervision.
  • Assist in storm restoration for distribution automation and with other groups.
