About The Position

The System Manager-Diabetes Education has direct oversight and accountability for all diabetes education operations and employees. They provide leadership and direction for the department that supports clinical, customer and service excellence and corporate effectiveness. Directs, supports, supervises, monitors and evaluates RN Diabetes Educators, Clinical Dietitians and the Clinical Diabetes Liaison and the services they provide, toward achieving compliance standards and the department’s strategic plan. Is responsible for recruiting, hiring and facilitating the orientation of staff. Develops, reviews and updates the departments policies, procedures and the operating budget. Uses program data to develop yearly Continuous Quality Improvement projects and department goals that aim to improve program outcomes and are consistent with hospital-wide plans. Establishes system-wide standards for the diabetes education department and holds staff accountable to these standards. The System Manager-Diabetes Education also serves as the Quality Coordinator for the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program(s). They are responsible for meeting both the national and state standards for recognition developed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and/or the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that the DSMES services provided are person-centered and must identify, analyze and communicate quality data for continued program improvement. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science, BSN, or Master’s degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience providing diabetes education and/or teaching experience required.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan or Registered Dietitian in good standing with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) required.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, take initiative, meet deadlines and be assertive.
  • Exhibit management skills that emphasize system team-building and strong leadership with the ability to provider clear direction to the department.
  • Establishes system-wide standards for the department and holds staff accountable to these standards.
  • Develops, reviews and updates department policies and procedures.
  • Interviews, hires, facilitates the training, develops and evaluates and staff.
  • Resolves patient complaints in a diplomatic and timely matter.
  • Must be able to set, organize and prioritize own work schedule, and adapt to them as they change frequently.
  • Must be able to work concurrently on multiple projects and tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms to patients, educators, hospital staff, physicians, management and administration.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to develop, implement and measure the department strategic plans and departmental goals and provide leadership and direction for staff to achieve these goals.
  • Develops and implements staff schedules to achieve maximum productivity and adequate staffing for all locations.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality and may require the use of significant tact in order to handle sensitive matters.
  • In-depth knowledge of the national and states standards for recognition developed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and/or the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
  • Maintains familiarity with the current national and state standards for recognition developed by the ADA and/or ADCES and MDHHS.
  • Continually reviews program and processes to assure that they Diabetes-Self Management Program sites comply with recognition requirements.
  • Provides for the selection and ongoing review of the diabetes curriculum and educational materials to ensure that they meet the needs of the population targeted.
  • Tracks outcomes to ensure we maintain a high-quality program and the needs of the patients, providers and community are met.
  • Responsible for preparing and submitting annual reports required by state and national accrediting bodies.
  • Keep abreast of current practices and concepts in diabetes education through current literature, seminars and direct contact with health professionals.
  • Ability to facilitate multidisciplinary work groups.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in EPIC EMR system.

  • Ensuring that the DSMES services provided are person-centered and must identify, analyze and communicate quality data for continued program improvement.
  • Develops and maintains a highly motivated and well-trained staff through coaching, mentoring and team building.
  • Assists in developing the department budget and reviews and reports on the monthly budget for the department with the goal of meeting budgeted expenses.
  • Manages, evaluates, disciplines and discharges subordinates or makes authoritative recommendations in such matters.
  • Responsible for the direction, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program.
  • Develops and directs the implementation of annual program evaluation plan and performance improvement activities, including CQI projects.
  • Tracks, organizes and reports necessary data and outcome measures required by both the state and national organizations.
  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with community groups, payors and potential referral sources.
  • Effectively presents data and information to gain support of key stakeholders when implementing/motivating change in the department.
  • Directs marketing activities for the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program.
  • Coordinates staff resources to participate in community events.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and CQI meetings with all staff.
  • Assists in achieving compliance with regulatory agency standards including state, federal and joint commission standards.
