About The Position

Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable. As part of a hardworking team of dynamic specialists, technicians, engineers, you will supply technical design support for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the New Glenn System Design, Assembly & Test team’s impact on all aspects of the New Glenn launch vehicle, ground system and facility development including launch vehicle interface control between elements, conceptual drawings, vehicle processing, launch operations, ground support equipment. You’ll be involved in the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of systems associated with this advanced launch system. As a Technical Designer, you’ll provide CAD and PLM support for the structural, mechanical and fluids systems throughout the development, manufacturing and launch operations phases. Utilizing PTC Creo and Windchill, you will create and maintain large 3D parametric design model and drawing data sets for a multitude of systems and teams. The best Blue Origin technical designers are versatile and skilled with experience using Creo’s supplemental extensions, such as AFX, Piping and Cabling, as well as proficient in manipulating associated Windchill product structures and change notices.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical or Systems Engineering or like field
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical design role
  • Experience managing large CAD assemblies and associated drawings
  • Experience with ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, Y14.41
  • Strong coordination and leadership skills
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across teams

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of relevant aerospace industry experience
  • Experience with PTC CAD and PLM software Creo and Windchill.
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly including experience taking products from development design to production and operation
  • Launch component Ground Support Equipment (GSE) structural, mechanical, or fluids systems experience
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines including mills, lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly, inspection, etc.
  • Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, bearings, etc.
  • Knowledge of ASME B31 and B31.3
  • Creo AFX (Advanced Framework Extension)
  • Creo Piping and Cabling Extension (PCX)
  • Knowledge of standard components, installation and fabrication methods of piping systems (pipe stock, fittings, connections, valves, fasteners, structural members, fitting, welding, etc)
  • Knowledge of fluid components typical in tubing and piping systems (valves, regulators, pumps, etc)

Responsibilities

  • High-level technical design support using advanced CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
  • Utilize Creo and Windchill to create and sustain engineering Product Definition Data (PDD) sets required for the New Glenn launch system flight and ground element development.
  • Create and maintain advanced 3D models, drawings and product structures.
  • Application of relevant company, industry (design, drafting, parts) techniques to plan, lay-out, and maintain data depicting engineering designs (detail, assembly and installation drawings or datasets)
  • Identify opportunities and recommendations for implementing workflow efficiencies.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with all levels of the organization
