About The Position

The Systems Administrator III acts in a lead capacity to design implement and manage local and wide-area networks to ensure maximum uptime for users on the Shelby County Government’s network and provide supervision leadership and support for subordinate network engineers. Pay Grade: 57 Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Requirements

  • Five (5) years' experience in a lead capacity of which three (3) years should be in complex experience in planning, configuration deployment, documentation, administration of L2 & L3 networks, network security systems, network management systems, and advanced troubleshooting of complex network issues; AND
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field; OR
  • An equivalent combination of related education, and/or experience.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Must be able to work on call as required.

  • All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees. This means exemption from this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. The residency exemption for public safety/civil service employees does not include appointed positions with the Sheriff’s Office, Division of Corrections, or the Fire Department.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of the software infrastructure components of the County’s multi-tier systems and other software platforms that host external and internal customer facing services.
  • Designs and supervises the utilization and maintenance of the network infrastructure components that provide the County with network connectivity of all servers, workstations, telephony equipment, fax machines, and other network appliances.
  • Supervises the research and evaluation of technologies and solutions that provide the integration, data exchange, and other supporting services utilized by the County’s hosted software.
  • Designs and supervises collaboration efforts with Datacenter, Applications, and Customer Services on network-related projects to support their operations systems.
  • Develops, writes, and administers standards and procedures associated with the implementation, Incident resolution, and support of network technologies.
  • Develops, writes, and administers standards and procedures for the installation, monitoring, and problem solving of the network system and application environments.
  • Supervises the monitoring of network systems performance and function, the dissemination of alert and fault indicators, and the development and implementation of pro-active reporting.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills in all work efforts with customers, management, and staff.
  • Provides high level of project planning/scheduling and supervision of project teams through use of coaching; training; and evaluations.
  • Prioritizes and manages multiple projects effectively while meeting aggressive deadlines.
  • Executes RFP processes, evaluates RFP responses, and provides purchase recommendations.
  • Assists in budget recommendations to management and future needs analysis for acquisition.
  • Assists in presenting to management recommendations related to purchasing and installing hardware and software.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed.
