About The Position

The UCF IT department within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking a Systems Engineer I to join our Infrastructure Security team. In this role, you’ll help power and protect the technology that keeps the university running every day. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will support the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of enterprise network and security systems that serve a diverse academic and administrative community. This position plays a key role in strengthening the reliability, performance, and security of core network services and security platforms, offering hands-on experience with modern infrastructure tools in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
  • Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ year of experience in a technical IT, infrastructure, security, or engineering support role, including internships, student worker positions, labs, or other hands-on environments.
  • Relevant degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science; or 4+ years of relevant professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 6+ months exposure to enterprise infrastructure, cloud platforms, or security technologies within an academic, enterprise, or internship setting.
  • Basic working knowledge of Windows and/or Linux operating systems, including system administration tasks, troubleshooting, or scripting.
  • Foundational understanding of networking concepts such as IP addressing, DNS, routing, firewalls, and network troubleshooting principles.
  • Familiarity with cloud, virtualization, or hosted service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), including general awareness of how these services are deployed and managed.
  • General awareness of information security principles such as least privilege, authentication, patching, logging, and monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and adapt to unfamiliar systems through research, testing, and iterative problem-solving/critical thinking.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document procedures and explain technical concepts clearly to peers and stakeholders.
  • A high level of initiative, curiosity, and ownership, with a strong interest in developing technical depth and taking on increasing responsibility over time.

Responsibilities

  • Provides first-line technical support and assistance to internal teams and stakeholders regarding network and security tools.
  • Responds to support tickets promptly and collaborates with teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively.
  • Assists with the administration and maintenance of network management tools, including: IP Address Management (IPAM), PRTG, Cisco and Extreme Management systems.
  • Perform routine updates, basic troubleshooting, and configuration tasks under supervision.
  • Monitor system alerts and help escalate issues appropriately to maintain network health and visibility.
  • Provides support for enterprise security platforms, including Secret Server for credential and secrets management.
  • Assist with permissions, vault organization, auditing tasks, and secure credential handling following established security policies.
  • Supports senior engineers with tasks related to F5 load balancer operations, configuration updates, pool/node adjustments, and health monitoring.
  • Azure Firewall policy updates, rule review, and traffic monitoring.
  • Adheres to UCF Infrastructure ITIL processes, such as request change management procedures, ensuring all planned changes are properly reviewed, documented, and communicated.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders to minimize disruption and ensure smooth implementation of changes.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, procedures, standards, and operational guidelines.
  • Contributes to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives by creating and updating technical documentation.
  • Develops and maintains automation for routine operational tasks, including system checks, monitoring activities, configuration updates, and report generation.
  • Uses scripting and automation tools to streamline day‑to‑day workflows, reduce manual effort, and improve consistency across network and security operation.
