About The Position

82nd Street Academics is looking for part-time teacher assistants for our Universal Pre-K (UPK) program for the 2025 - 2026 school year. These positions will be based at our main site in Jackson Heights, Queens. Teacher Assistants work with 3K and 4K students in small groups, support academic interventions, and facilitate play-based learning with the Lead Teacher. The estimated hours of this part-time position are Monday through Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are weekly meetings and professional developments that may occur outside of these hours. The pay rate is $18-20 per hour.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to complete required trainings and professional development.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (preferred).
  • Previous experience working with children ages 0–5 (preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to support diverse learners, including students with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the lead teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with DOE Teaching Strategies curriculum.
  • Support small-group and one-on-one instruction to reinforce learning concepts in early literacy, math, and social-emotional development.
  • Help prepare and organize classroom materials and learning centers.
  • Reinforce directions and model appropriate behaviors during activities.
  • Help maintain a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Support consistent routines and transitions throughout the day.
  • Monitor student behavior and use positive reinforcement strategies.
  • Assist in managing conflicts and guiding students in problem-solving.
  • Provide individualized support based on student needs, including prompting, redirection, and task breakdown.
  • Implement accommodations and strategies outlined in IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) or 504 plans.
  • Use visual supports, schedules, and cues to enhance understanding and predictability.
  • Support sensory needs (e.g., movement breaks, calming strategies, quiet spaces).
  • Assist students with attention challenges by minimizing distractions and using clear, concise instructions.
  • Encourage social interaction and communication skills through guided play and structured activities.
  • Collaborate with the teacher and related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists).
  • Observe and record student progress, behavior, and developmental milestones.
  • Share relevant observations with the lead teacher to inform instruction and interventions.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records and documentation as required.
  • Work closely with the lead teacher to support daily classroom operations.
  • Maintain open, respectful communication with staff and families when appropriate.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, meals, recess, and transitions.
  • Assist with basic care needs (e.g., handwashing, toileting, dressing).
  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Demonstrate patience, flexibility, and a nurturing attitude.
  • Support an inclusive classroom environment that respects all learners.
