About The Position

The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily, complete all assignments, and attend required live instructional sessions. K12, inc. is our curriculum provider. Teachers meet with students daily in virtual classrooms to provide standards-based targeted instruction that meets the needs of the students, as well as support students in coursework, provide additional one-to-one support, provide feedback, and grade student work. Teachers build lasting relationships with their students through consistent outreach throughout the school year and monitor attendance and engagement. Additionally, teachers provide interventions as needed to ensure students remain engaged and grow academically. Teachers meet with students throughout the week in virtual classrooms to provide standards-based targeted instruction that meets the needs of the students during daily “Circle Time”. Teachers also support students in coursework, provide additional one-to-one support, grade student work, and provide feedback. Teachers build lasting relationships with their students through consistent outreach throughout the school year and monitor attendance and engagement. Additionally, teachers provide interventions as needed to ensure students remain engaged and grow academically. Teachers are required to connect virtually with students once per month at minimum and attend/coordinate in-person events twice per quarter. All teachers are required to proctor state testing.

Requirements

  • Familiarity navigating the internet utilizing various browsers (i.e. Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome)
  • Must hold a valid California Multiple Subject Teaching credential
  • California English Learner Authorization
  • At least 24 units in early childhood education, or childhood development, or both.
  • As determined by the LEA employing the teacher, professional experience in a classroom setting with preschool age children that is comparable to the 24 units of education described in bullet point
  • A child development teacher permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Responsibilities

  • Know and understand the Embark curriculum.
  • Provide students with quarterly assignments via an Individualized Learning Plan and discuss assignments with students/Learning Coaches regularly.
  • Conduct online daily “Circle Time” with students.
  • Instruct individual, small group, and whole groups of students online on a daily basis based upon different data sources.
  • Conduct in person and/or virtual meetings every quarter or as required with parents/responsible adults and students to assess each student’s progress, learning style, and any other academic, social or developmental issues.
  • Collect, review, and evaluate student work.
  • Grade and submit work in a professional and timely manner.
  • Discuss pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
  • Work with students when adjustment and academic problems arise.
  • Proactively track student academic progress and attendance on a daily and weekly basis and communicate with families whenever a warning sign emerges.
  • Ensure completion of student assessments and utilize student data to drive ongoing instruction.
  • Conduct conferences with parents/responsible adults to assess each student’s progress, learning style, and any other academic, social, or developmental issues.
  • Alert administrators of any concerns about student progress.
  • Support parents with student placement, curriculum, and instructional issues.
  • Support parents with school set-up, including computer set-up, and logistics questions.
  • Respond as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours to parent, student, teacher, and admin inquiries via phone and/or email during regular work week.
  • Organize orientation, training, social, and educational activities for students and families including attending community building activities such as school outings, service-learning opportunities, clubs, and events.
  • Travel regularly within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities such as, back to school events, open houses, and orientations.
  • Complete report cards and assign grades for mid semester progress reports and semester report cards.
  • Generate informal and formal reports based on parent/student conferences.
  • Complete monthly attendance spreadsheets to be used for state attendance reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with state requirements.
  • Actively participate in student SST and or IEP process and agreement.
  • Participate in a teacher conference calls/meetings as needed.
  • Participate in regional professional developments (virtual and in person).
  • Actively participate in all aspects of standardized testing (including, but not limited to, working with administration to prepare students for testing, ensuring all students are tested, assisting with the logistics of selecting testing sites).
  • Serve as proctors for site-based proctored exams.
  • Participate in teacher evaluation process.
  • Participate in the school's self-evaluation process.
  • Assist with various projects throughout the year with colleagues and administration, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned
