About The Position

WSP is currently seeking a Technical Director, Lead Steel Inspector to join our team in Atlanta, GA. This role is a hands‑on, field‑intensive position responsible for providing quality assurance (QA) inspection services for structural steel fabrication and construction activities on GDOT projects. The successful candidate will work closely with GDOT representatives, contractors, fabricators, and engineers to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in construction inspection, structural steel, or bridge projects
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification (required)
  • Experience performing QA/QC during structural steel fabrication and construction
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a field environment
  • Willingness to travel statewide for GDOT assignments, including overnight stays
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on GDOT bridge and transportation projects
  • ASNT NDT Level II or Level III certification
  • ICC Bolting Certification
  • Experience with metallizing and related inspection activities
  • NACE / AMPP or SSPC Coatings Inspector Level II certification
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active traffic zones
  • Ability to climb, bend, crawl, work at heights, in confined spaces, and on uneven terrain
  • Ability to lift 25+ pounds and perform rigorous physical activity

Responsibilities

  • Perform QA inspections of structural steel fabrication and field activities, including welding, bolting, dimensional checks, coatings, and material verification
  • Inspect welding in accordance with AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.5 for bridge and transportation structures
  • Monitor surface preparation, cleanliness, environmental conditions, coating mixing, and application for compliance with GDOT and project specifications
  • Coordinate and communicate with GDOT staff, owners, contractors, fabricators, engineers, CWIs, and NDT technicians
  • Verify work complies with approved shop drawings, contract documents, standards, and specifications
  • Inspect bridge‑related components such as bearings, expansion joints, beams, sign structures, and other steel elements as required
  • Prepare daily inspection reports in digital format
  • Participate in project and company safety meetings
