The P ZA ADMIN - T&D OPERATIONS Department of the P T&D OPERATIONS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional Supervisor) JOB FUNCTION: Directs, supervises and/or conducts training academics and activities for the Division. Collaborates with supervisors and division personnel in developing, maintaining, coordinating, and conducting training courses, programs, materials, and scenarios relating to technical skills, employee development, teamwork, and leadership training for division personnel. Works with supervisors to provide status updates, monitor/measure personnel progress and evaluate effectiveness of programs. Utilizes continuous improvement best practices such as LEAN Six Sigma and ADKAR Change Management to enhance and achieve high performance with a safety mindset and operational excellence, to cultivate change to ensure employee competencies; and ensure through training activities our Company’s service promise and standards, WeConnect philosophies, decision priorities, and core Company values permeate through the Division’s daily activities.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of electrical systems, normally acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge in the operation and maintenance of transmission, distribution, and substation facilities
  • Working knowledge of transmission and distribution overhead and underground construction and work standards.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for compliance with State and Federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures contained in such documents as the System Operation Procedure Manual, Company/Union agreement, Safety & Health Manual, General Information Manual etc.
  • Demonstrated supervisory/leadership skills including effective written, oral, and listening communication skills; conflict resolution skills; the willingness and ability to train.
  • Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused well-informed workforce. Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce to support company initiatives
  • Able to read, comprehend and utilize technical publications such as manufacturer’s instruction manuals, training manuals, blueprints, and electrical single line diagrams.
  • Has the ability to solve problems independently and/or with the assistance of others.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to handle difficult or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii CDL Class A driver’s license.
  • Must meet the standards for frequent or required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

  • Extensive (8+) of operational and/or maintenance related experience in an electric utility or equivalent.
  • A few years (1-2) of related work experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity.
  • A few years (1-2) of related experience in preparing operating budgets and managing expenses preferred.
  • A few years (1-2) experience training peers or subordinates.

Nice To Haves

  • A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for five (5) years of experience.
  • Qualified or capable of qualifying as crew leader, and/or possess supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals in an electrical transmission and distribution setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Division Training Program & Curriculum – Facilitates identification of training needs of division personnel with supervisors and field personnel.
  • Develops and coordinates delivery of a comprehensive training program to meet division goals, performance metrics, enhance the organization’s capability, and support supervisors to ensure personnel competency related to job descriptions and compliance with all company standards including State and Federal regulations.
  • Develops curriculum and materials for all division technical training programs (i.e., training manuals), including annual refresher training, new equipment training, and new/updated operating procedures.
  • Formulates structured lesson plans, delivers appropriate training through various modes and measures performance.
  • Updates existing manuals, standard operating procedures, and job aids, as needed.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of training plans and programs in relation to established training objectives and performance measures and incorporates appropriate strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Review safety incidents and works with supervisors and employees to identify training program gaps and revise training programs and curriculum accordingly.
  • Support supervisors to coordinate post-incident training and follow-up assessments of employees.
  • Employee Development Programs - Evaluates, develops and improves multi-year programs that prepare employees to ascend to next level positions and address succession planning needs.
  • Develops evaluation tools and proficiency testing to ensure competency.
  • Assists supervisors in monitoring the progress of the trainees providing the necessary improvements needed to successfully complete programs and pass required proficiency tests.
  • Program/Material Delivery – Identifies, coordinates, and delivers program content through complementary, supplementary and/or alternative training providers, modes, and resources.
  • Works in coordination with the division Operations Technical Specialist, Corporate Safety, Operations Planning and Construction Management, vendors, contractors, supervisors, and crew personnel to effectively deliver program content.
  • Provides administration and/or project management of consultants hired to perform training of division employees.
  • Develops and updates reports on metrics and effectiveness of programs.
  • Ensures reliable/valid testing procedures are in place.
  • Assists in the development, monitoring and analyzing of the division’s annual training budget
  • May temporarily substitute for other merit staff in Incident Command events or other emergencies.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
