About The Position

The Technology Support Specialist II provides comprehensive technical and operational support for multimedia, audio-visual, and instructional technologies across the Palm Desert campus. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in complex troubleshooting, systems integration, and event technology management, supporting over 200 Next Generation Smart Classrooms (NGSC) and multiple performance venues such as the Indian Wells Theater. This position leads technology enhancements and initiatives that advance teaching, learning, and community engagement, ensuring high reliability and innovation in all multimedia environments.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Strong knowledge and expertise in hardware and software troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of network connectivity, server administration, and system troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate technology support.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage technology support delivery and complete related small projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present technical information to technically diverse audiences in a clear and concise manner and produce technology education materials.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate technology and configure and deploy systems updates.
  • Skill in providing direction and training to others.
  • Proficiency in using applicable software or technology systems.
  • Knowledge of university policies, data needs, and data privacy regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Communications, Theater Production, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience operating digital mixing consoles, lighting control systems, and projection systems.
  • Familiarity with Crestron, Extron, or similar control systems and remote monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with higher education technology environments, immersive media tools, or hybrid instruction systems preferred.
  • Live performance equipment such as lighting consoles and stage audio systems.
  • Principles, methods, and procedures related to IT systems and end-user support.
  • Audio-visual systems, projection, and sound reinforcement technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support involving complex setup, maintenance, and issue resolution for Next Generation Smart Classrooms (NGSC), instructional spaces, and performance venues.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex AV, control-system, and computing issues; manage firmware/software updates; ensure reliable operation of projection, audio, and hybrid teaching technologies.
  • Lead technical setup and operation for classes, events, and performances, supervising and training student assistants or temporary staff.
  • Provide comprehensive technical support and trouble shooting including but not limited to setup for operation, and tear down for campus events, performances, and presentations.
  • Operate and maintain live sound reinforcement, theatrical lighting, and video projection systems.
  • Deliver faculty and staff training and consultation on the effective use of classroom, remote-learning, and immersive technologies (Zoom, Teams, lecture-capture systems, etc.).
  • Develop documentation, demonstrations, and support resources that promote confident, effective technology use.
  • Track and maintain multimedia and performance equipment inventory.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and assist with upgrades to AV and classroom systems.
  • Support immersive media, live streaming and digital content initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are consistent with the Technology Support Specialist II classification.
  • Supports technology operations, contributes to documentation and service improvements, and assists with technical tasks and projects that ensure the effective delivery of instructional, multimedia, and end-user computing services.
  • May be required to provide support for other IT functions or service areas, as needed, to ensure continuity of operations and effective delivery of campus technology services.
