About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to receive incoming telephone calls to the Central Dispatch and dispatch the appropriate agency to respond to the need for assistance. Work significantly impacts the safety of the general public and the responding agency personnel. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Receives emergency and non-emergency calls to the Central Dispatch; monitors police, sheriff, fire and rescue radio; provides information, answers questions and/or refers caller to appropriate staff for non-emergency and emergency situations; receives calls for animal control; monitors all business and residential alarms. Receives and logs incoming calls and dispatches information via radio console; maintains records of incoming calls and dispatching activities; queries information in the LINK/NCIC system; enters all written complaints in central file computer. Maintains a variety of records, logs, and files; performs various clerical support activities to including typing and filing; faxes documents; copies forms. Enters information into in-house and LINK/NCIC computer, including wanted or missing persons, citations, warnings, parking tickets, stolen property, emergency protective orders, domestic violence orders, etc.; retrieves LINK/VCIN information. Performs daily fire pager test; participates in severe weather drills and emergency disaster drills. Tracks police, sheriff, city/county, and fire units. Takes business and personal messages. Answers utility calls after hours; contacts person on call for requested department. Looks up phone numbers; looks up streets on maps, violation codes, fire laws, ordinances, and schedules. May serve as Terminal Agency Contact (TAC). Maintains and distributes keys to firing range and area boy scout camp to proper persons. Reads manuals, teletypes, HOT sheet, etc. Operates a personal computer, telephone, radio, LINK terminal, 911 system, facsimile machine, copier, alarm boards, TDD/TTY, shredder, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Supplemented by basic and annual training in telecommunication
  • One year of experience in police department and other emergency services operating procedures, the City’s geography, and working under pressure situations
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license
  • Must possess and maintain valid LINK/NCIC Operator’s certification and Basic Telecommunications certification
