About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is now hiring summer temporary maintenance workers! Pay rate of $19.941 per hour to start. If utilized by the Agency, and at the discretion of the District, those who currently possess a CDL may be promoted to the Worker Senior level at the rate of $21.470 per hour. D6 Work Locations hiring in west central Nebraska: North Platte, Wallace, Broken Bow, Ansley, Oconto, Lexington, Gothenburg, Mullen, Arthur, Hyannis, Stapleton, Thedford, Ogallala, Big Springs. Summer positions, temporary, until November 30, 2026. Hours may depend on the weather, may be more or less than 40 hours per week. Requirements

  • Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Highway Maintenance Worker/ Senior: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.
  • Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic.
  • Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within 45 minutes of notification.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license.
  • Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
  • May require out of town, overnight travel.

Responsibilities

  • Be part of NDOT as a teammate!
  • Our teams perform remote work at different locations to perform their assignments which may include operating tractors and mowers to mow and trim vegetation on NDOT Right of Way.
  • Perform pavement preservation activities or Traffic control procedures.
  • May assist in the maintenance and care of the State Highway system or its infrastructure.
  • Be a crew member for Roadway Striping Operations, a Fence Repair Crew, or a Sign Maintenance Crew, repairing roadside features.
  • May assist in repairing or maintaining pavement, culverts, or bridges.
  • Manually provide highway traffic control by Flagging traffic around a work zone or driving a pilot vehicle.
  • May install temporary traffic control signs or devices or responding to emergency situations to assist in traffic incident management.
  • May perform routine care or maintenance to the department’s fleet.
  • Perform activities following department safety procedures.
  • Safely remove objects from roadway under traffic.
  • Drive department vehicles or equipment as trained for Transportation Maintenance and Operations activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
