About The Position

Temporary Summer Employment - Carpenter Shop- 3 to 4 month assignment from April through August. The Temporary Carpenter possesses comprehensive knowledge of every facet of the carpentry trade. With minimal oversight, the journey level carpenter performs minor and major repairs; remodels, refurbishes and renovates rooms and structures inside and out; and undertakes all types of workshop related tasks. Rate of pay is $35.00 per hour.

Requirements

Is a seasoned professional (five years beyond apprenticeship or equivalent) who is dedicated to providing outstanding customer service to the University community.
Possesses a friendly, positive attitude with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Has the skills to handle any carpentry related issues in order to complete a given project. This extends from the planning stages to testing and checkout inspection.
Can quickly interpret blueprints/layouts, develop material lists and perform any mathematical calculations needed.
Has a working knowledge of applicable building codes.
Has basic computer literacy and the ability to work with computerized maintenance management software (CMMS) to receive work orders and provide documentation.
Is able to work proficiently with all types of hand and power tools, such as saws, planers, joiners, shapers, routers, nail guns, laser levels, etc.
Handle investigations of difficult work problems, is able to evaluate alternative solutions and make sound recommendations to supervisory team.
Is a self-starter who can identify and take on difficult tasks effectively.
Possesses a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Passes a comprehensive background check.
Is able to meet the physical demands of the job as set forth below.
High School Diploma or equivalent

Responsibilities

Observes University safety regulations at all times by wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) and performs tasks in the safest manner possible whether alone or in a group setting.
Ensures proper care and safe use of University vehicles, tools and equipment.
Produces consistent, professional quality results in all aspects of rough and finish carpentry, including framing, insulating and sheet-rock installation; mounting windows, doors, and associated hardware; fabricating Formica tops and back-splashes; fence installation and repair; stair, deck and railing construction; setting cabinets and countertops; laying flooring of all types, fitting acoustical ceiling tiles and hanging grid-work; etc.
Makes precise, well-crafted cabinetry, furniture, and intricate woodwork of all types.
Interprets blueprints, drawings and sketches quickly and accurately for new construction, renovations, remodeling, cabinetry, furniture and millwork.
Performs maintenance and cleanup of job sites, company vehicles, storage areas and work shop.
Communicates clearly and effectively with coworkers and supervisors, both verbally and in writing.
Cooperates with or assists other facilities’ personnel to complete multi-trade projects.
Provides support for all campus special events, including annual reunion set-ups and take-downs.
Works overtime during the week or on weekends to complete time sensitive work.
Commits to being an “essential” employee who is required to come to work for any weather-related emergency whenever needed.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
