About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Emerging Systems Business Unit, which will shape the future of our in-space infrastructure capabilities. The Emerging Systems business unit at Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide. As the terrestrial network orchestration architect, you will play a vital leadership role within a team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, significantly contributing to the operation of the constellation and the network operations center. Your role will involve utilizing your expertise with networking to help define the network architecture that dynamically optimizes traffic from between gateways, terrestrial backhaul networks, datacenters and user end-points. You will also create a simulator which can be used to examine implementations of the architecture, and working with the team to realize the architecture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of experience in network architecture, design, or engineering
  • Strong understanding of terrestrial network Points of Presence (PoPs), IP Exchange (IPx), fiber plants and datacenter connectivity.
  • Strong understanding of networking and network protocols including MEF, SD-WAN, BGP, MPLS, SRv6, L2 VPNs, L3 VPNs
  • Experience with architecting, designing, or developing software-defined networking solutions
  • Experience with network modeling and simulation tools
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining network architecture diagrams and technical documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in network architecture with focus on routing
  • Experience with networking for constrained links such as 3GPP and satellite networks
  • Knowledge of spacecraft operations and constraints as they relate to communications systems
  • Familiarity with network function virtualization and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Background in aerospace or defense industries
  • Certifications such as CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent advanced networking certifications
  • Knowledge of emerging space-based networking standards and technologies

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement distributed network orchestration solutions to create optimized routing/switching framework for terrestrial networks and satellite gateways
  • Create and maintain network models to predict performance and identify optimization opportunities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate network capabilities into broader systems and applications. You will work closely with the space network architecture team.
  • Analyze network performance and troubleshoot complex issues across distributed systems
  • Implement security best practices and protocols to protect network infrastructure
  • Evaluate and recommend new networking technologies and solutions to enhance network capabilities and performance
  • Understand the implications of network planning on spacecraft operations and design accordingly
  • Lead technical discussions and provide expert guidance on networking solutions
