About The Position

This position is responsible for understanding and carrying out all aspects of the tissue recovery process, including the skillful recovery of all tissue types; enabling the organization to optimize donor and donor family wishes, and to maximize and increase the supply of safe transplantable tissues to those in need while meeting AATB, EBAA and FDA standards.

Requirements

  • High school degree required.
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to stand/work for greater than 16 hours in an operating room environment.
  • Lifebanc operates 24 hours a day and this position requires flexibility and the ability to work independently and be flexible in a dynamic team environment without direct supervision.
  • The qualified candidate must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, a safe driving record, current auto insurance and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.

Nice To Haves

  • A degree, diploma or certificate in allied health, life sciences or nursing is preferred (Surgical Technician, LPN, EMT(P), Embalmer).
  • One year or more experience working in a healthcare related field is preferred.
  • Prior operating room experience is preferred and the ability to be on your feet for six or more hours.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assigned shifts on the tissue recovery schedule to always assure consistent coverage, and maximize procurement opportunities that provide quality tissue for transplant.
  • Reviews authorization/disclosure forms to verify donor identity and for proper documentation of tissues for recovery, while following appropriate age criteria to recover all appropriate consented tissues for the appropriate processors.
  • Performs specimen collection for coroner/ME/pathologist (when requested) and draws blood for infectious disease testing to evaluate the donor's suitability for transplantation. Performs all aspects of tissue recovery including both surgical recovery of eyes and/or tissues, while maintaining sterility and performance standards within set department benchmarks for culturing and error rates.
  • Verifies labels of tissues, blood specimen, and cultures for complete correct identification information; and packages to ensure that proper identification and environmental conditions will be maintained during transport of the donor tissue.
  • Performs reconstruction and preparation of the donor body for transfer to funeral home or coroner/ME/pathologist.
  • Admit donors to Lifebanc, while completing required documentation.
  • Takes photographs of the donor pre and post recovery as dictated by standard operating procedures.
  • Release donors from Lifebanc, while completing required documentation.
  • Meets/exceeds goals in at least five of the seven regularly recovered tissue metrics; skin culture rate, avg skin recovery yield, MS culture rate, cornea Tissue Quality Index, SV error rate, HV error rate, and average nerve debrided length.
  • Verifies labels of tissues, blood specimen, and cultures for complete correct identification information and packs to ensure that proper identification and environmental conditions will be maintained during transport.
  • Responsible for ensuring all recovery steps are completed according to standard operating procedures and quality standards.
  • Communicates positively with the recovery team, Administrator on Call and the Donation Services Coordinator.
  • Will learn the team lead role; becoming proficient at documentation, packaging the tissue, and ensuring the team follows all policies and procedures.
  • Assists with preparing tissue recovery supplies for offsite recoveries to assure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities, to increase tissue recovery knowledge and ensure that recovery skill leads to meeting/exceeding metric goals.
  • Completes necessary charting corrections and required follow-up to ensure timely release of tissue for transplantation.
  • Acts as preceptor to peers, providing guidance for new hires in training for all aspects of tissue recovery.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
