Plans, constructs, alters, and repairs a variety of molds, tools, dies, clamps and other fixtures as required for production. The design can be variable requiring the use of judgment, knowledge and machining skills to make required repairs or modifications. Uses milling machine, lathe, surface grinder, hand grinders, and a variety of hand tools in the performance of repairs and modifications. Uses a variety of precision measuring instruments along with blueprints to check part dimensions and fit and finish requirements. Makes necessary mathematical calculations and selects tolerances for fit and finish of parts. Diagnose and remedy mold or die malfunctions. Performs difficult and exacting machine setups to maintain tight tolerances; skilled bench work, fitting and assembly or adjustments to insure satisfactory operations. Candidates for this position must have a strong understanding of accurate bench and machine operations requiring skill and a thorough knowledge of toolmaking practices; making correct decisions as to fit, finish, machining and assembly sequences to produce workable parts. Should possess the ability to troubleshoot hot runner systems on injection molds. Must be able to setup, run, and maintain close tolerances on milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders. Prior work experience with EDM setup and operation will be a plus. Should have prior work experience repairing Plastic Injection Molds. Prior experience in repairing dies will be a plus. CAD/CAM experience would be a plus. Machining experience and training should be the equivalent of a Journeyman Toolmaker. We prefer a background of formal machinist trades training or completion of an apprenticeship program for toolmaking.
