Role description: Arcadis is seeking a qualified Traction Power Engineering Lead to join our Rail & Transit business and work on delivering our existing and future portfolio of projects. This position can be based out of any of our Toronto offices, with flexibility to attend project or client sites as required by project need. The position is a senior-level opportunity to lead design and technical assurance of large, complex railway projects and serve as a mentor to our broader engineering and design staff. This role is suited to an experienced licensed Professional Engineer with deep expertise in railway traction power systems and a proven track record of sealing complex infrastructure designs.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in design for major rail and transit projects, preferably within Canada.
  • Strong understanding of traction power design is required. Preferably with experience in both Light and Heavy rail.
  • Hands-on experience with traction substation design for AC (25 kV) and DC (1.5 kV or 750 V) electrification systems
  • Demonstratable experience with traction power simulation and load flow tools
  • Experience with rail potential, stray current and earthing systems for electrified railway environments
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; Master’s degree is an asset.
  • P.Eng. license in Ontario is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian railway design standards and regulations, Transport Canada Railway Safety Act, CSA standards, AREMA and Metrolinx/GO Technical standards.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to alternate project delivery models including AFP. Design-Build-Finance, Alliance or P3 structures is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design, assurance and integration of transit traction power systems, including traction power substations (TPSS), switching stations, paralleling stations, negative return systems and track to earth fault protection, ensuring that all solutions are aligned with project goals and client requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with civil, systems, and construction teams to ensure the seamless integration of traction power systems into the broader infrastructure.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations is a critical aspect of the role. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining quality and safety throughout the design and assurance process, meeting both industry and owners requirements.
  • Uphold Arcadis Quality Management System and ensure deliverables are produced in accordance with project and applicable industry standards,
  • Act as technical lead for Traction Power matters with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to facilitate approvals and resolve technical issues.
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and quality assurance activities to maintain the integrity and reliability of the traction power system as well as resolving complex technical issues and provide guidance on engineering solutions.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical leadership and innovation across the team.
