Thomas, Inc we play a critical role in supporting essential overnight operations on the Oakland Bay Bridge, and we're looking for a skilled professional to help ensure safe, compliant, and efficient traffic control in a fast‑paced, high‑risk environment. This role is ideal for a Traffic Control Technician who thrives in active field conditions, understands complex traffic control plans, and takes pride in protecting workers, motorists, and the public. You will support nightly lane closures, assist with the setup and inspection of traffic control devices, and help maintain compliance with approved traffic control plans, Caltrans standards, and site‑specific safety requirements. Your work will be essential to the safe execution of industrial coating and equipment‑intensive activities occurring within live traffic corridors. This position is primarily night shift , with staggered start times designed to align with Bay Area traffic patterns and major events. Work is performed during low‑impact overnight hours to safely implement lane closures and minimize disruption to the traveling public. The typical workweek ranges from 50 to 60 hours , reflecting the critical and around‑the-clock nature of this long‑term, 5‑year bridge infrastructure project. ABOUT US: F.D. Thomas, Inc. WHAT YOU'LL DO: In this Traffic Control Technician role, you will support nightly bridge operations by providing on‑site traffic control, and support the safe setup, maintenance, and removal of lane closures in accordance with approved traffic control plans. You will monitor traffic control operations throughout the shift, conduct field observations and inspections of traffic control devices, and identify hazards that could impact workers or the traveling public. This role includes verifying that cones, barriers, signage, lighting, and attenuators are properly placed and functioning, and ensuring ongoing compliance with Caltrans standards, project requirements, and site‑specific safety procedures during industrial coating, equipment, and roadway operations.

Requirements

  • Journey‑level or experienced Traffic Control Safety Technician with demonstrated ability to set up, maintain, and remove lane closures in accordance with approved Traffic Control Plans (TCPs)
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with all Caltrans, MUTCD, and state DOT traffic control standards, as well as project‑specific requirements
  • Experience working on union infrastructure projects, with a clear understanding of jurisdictional boundaries, craft responsibilities, and work rules under a collective bargaining agreement (CBA)
  • Ability to safely coordinate closure activities, and assist with proper staging of crews, equipment, and traffic control vehicles
  • Proven ability to work safely in active traffic environments, on bridges, elevated structures, and within tight work zones
  • Physically capable of performing required duties, including handling cones, drums, barriers, signage, and other traffic control devices throughout the shift
  • Ability to inspect and maintain traffic control setups, identify unsafe conditions, and promptly report issues to supervision in accordance with union and site procedures
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate effectively with foremen, operators, and other represented crafts to support safe and efficient lane closures
  • Must adhere to all union safety rules, site safety policies, and contractor requirements, while maintaining productivity and professionalism
  • Willingness to work night shift, staggered start times, weekends, and extended hours as required by project scheduling (typically 50–60 hours per week)
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record, where required by the scope of work

Nice To Haves

  • Traffic Control Technician (TCT) or Traffic Control Safety Technician (TCST) certification
  • Flagger certification
  • Caltrans or state‑approved traffic control training
  • Additional certifications as required by the applicable union agreement or owner agency

Responsibilities

  • Set up, adjust, and remove lane closures on bridges in accordance with approved traffic control plans, MUTCD standards, and project specifications
  • Install and remove traffic control devices including cones, drums, barricades, signs, arrow boards, and temporary barriers
  • Conduct pre-shift and ongoing safety checks to ensure traffic control setups are visible, stable, and compliant in a bridge environment
  • Maintain safe traffic flow for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists while protecting crews working on or under the bridge
  • Monitor traffic conditions and make field adjustments as needed due to congestion, weather, or site constraints
  • Lead and supervise one or more Traffic Control Helpers, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and correctly
  • Provide clear direction, mentoring, and on-the-job training to helpers
  • Communicate effectively with construction crews, supervisors, and inspectors regarding lane status and traffic impacts
  • Identify and promptly correct unsafe conditions or non-compliant setups
  • Follow all company safety policies, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and bridge-specific safety requirements (fall hazards, limited shoulders, narrow lanes, etc.)
  • Assist with documentation such as daily reports, lane closure logs, or inspection checklists
  • Perform physical work including lifting, carrying, and working in traffic-exposed environments for extended periods
  • Work on active bridges and roadways with live traffic
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, or varying shifts as required by lane closure schedules
  • Stand, walk, and lift traffic control equipment for long durations
  • Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with the public and project personnel
