About The Position

The Regional Operations Training & Mentor Manager is responsible for the development, delivery, execution, and validation of field training and mentoring programs within the assigned region. This role operates within the Safety HSE (health, safety & environmental)Department and serves as a critical gatekeeper to ensure operations employees are trained, competent, and authorized to perform work independently in a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible manner. This position plays a key role in protecting employees, customers, and the company by ensuring compliance with DOT regulations, HSE standards, internal policies, and customer requirements, while supporting a strong and consistent safety culture across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Train, evaluate, and verify competency for new operations employees prior to authorizing independent work.
  • Validate employee knowledge and hands-on ability to safely perform job tasks in accordance with DOT, safety, and company standards.
  • Ensure only employees who successfully complete all required training and competency evaluations are released to work independently.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and audit-ready training and competency documentation for new and existing employees.
  • Re-verify employee competency following incidents, near misses, procedural updates, equipment changes, or identified performance gaps.
  • Conduct periodic field audits and evaluations to confirm continued compliance and safe work practices.
  • Lead ongoing SSE (short service employee) and mentor calls verifying the training progress of new employees.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee a regional mentor program to ensure consistent onboarding and skills development.
  • Identify, qualify, and coach mentors to ensure alignment with company safety standards and training expectations.
  • Provide hands-on, in-field training and coaching for new hires and existing operations employees.
  • Conduct ride-a-long’s, field observations, and job-site evaluations to reinforce safe behaviors and address training gaps.
  • Lead SSE Graduation process, including coordinating the review committee, assessing competency, validating readiness, and participating in the committee’s determination of eligibility for graduation from the program.
  • Perform regular field engagements to observe operations, reinforce safe work practices, and identify training or procedural gaps.
  • Participate in and support the Safety Leadership Roundtable by contributing field observations, training trends, and improvement recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Safety and Operations leadership to identify opportunities to improve procedures, equipment, and work practices.
  • Verify that approved safety and operational improvements are implemented and sustained within the assigned region.
  • Identify and recommend additional classroom, hands-on, or refresher training based on incident trends, audits, or field observations.
  • Support DOT audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections as requested.
  • Provide structured feedback to Safety and Operations leadership on training effectiveness, competency trends, and operational readiness gaps.
  • Support post-incident reviews by assessing training adequacy and competency alignment, with a focus on improvement rather than discipline.
  • Assist in maintaining standardized training materials, competency checklists, and verification tools to ensure regional consistency.
  • Model and reinforce a strong safety culture centered on accountability, consistency, and environmental stewardship.
  • Serve as a visible safety leader and trusted resource for operations employees.
  • Support regional HSE initiatives, safety meetings, and continuous improvement efforts.
