Manufacturing takes place across several U.S.-based facilities. FMD delivers high-performance engines and critical components directly to naval marine customers and shipyards. As a principal supplier of reliable diesel engines to the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Canadian Coast Guard, our technology powers mission-critical operations across the globe. Chesapeake Training & Service Center Join our team at the new state-of-the-art Chesapeake Training & Service Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. facility designed to expand service and hands-on training opportunities for technicians and customers. This center houses: Four in-production Fairbanks Morse engines for overhaul and component training. Equipment from all FMD and partner product lines. Workshops: 10,000 sq. ft. (1,500 sq. ft. Fuel Shop) Training Center Shop: 13,000 sq. ft. Service Center: 20,000 sq. ft. Tech Library & Classrooms: 12,000 sq. ft. Temperature-controlled, multi-tiered parts storage systems The Chesapeake center provides on-site support for Davit repairs, valve & actuator repairs, motors & controllers aftermarket support, and specialized weapons & handling equipment. Position Summary The Training Instructor is a critical member of the Fairbanks Morse Services Team, leading the development and delivery of training programs for both customers and Field Service Technicians. You will deliver classroom and hands-on instruction on diesel engines and key product lines including Davits and Flushing systems, leveraging our state-of-the-art Chesapeake facility. This role combines technical expertise, leadership, and training excellence. You will support the continuous improvement and maintenance of training programs, ensure certification standards are met, and work closely with cross-functional teams. Your military, field service, or diesel engine experience will be highly valued, allowing you to continue serving the nation in a civilian capacity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 3 years equivalent experience in Diesel Engines or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an instructor or supervisor.
  • 3 years’ experience with diesel engine operation and maintenance.
  • Proven ability to supervise small teams focused on safe execution of complex evolutions.
  • High degree of problem solving and critical thinking; calmly evaluate risks and drive safe maintenance evolutions.
  • Outstanding communication skills (written and oral) with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with customers and colleagues.
  • Action-oriented, able to establish relationships at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Curriculum development skills, producing presentations and hands-on labs for internal and external customers.
  • Travel requirement: 25% (domestic or international for training or curriculum support).
  • Access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NOFORN) is required; proof of U.S. Citizenship must be provided.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as an instructor in an Engineering-related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience with PC2 engines is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom lectures on diesel engine operation, schematics, and maintenance procedures.
  • Conduct maintenance labs safely and effectively using FMD’s cutting-edge training engines and equipment.
  • Provide company-wide education on FMD product lines and theoretical concepts used in diesel engine and electrical equipment design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams for product line certifications, including exams, LMS, and certification boards.
  • Act as a catalyst for organizational change by communicating and influencing teams in support of initiatives.
  • Manage courses, supplies, training aids, and course improvements.
  • Travel as needed for remote training events and new product course development.
  • Develop curriculum for new products or improvements to existing FMD products.
  • Communicate key feedback and recommendations to the Training Manager.
  • Lead training communications with internal and external customers to facilitate course scheduling and billing.
  • Ensure adherence to course schedules and preparation for training courses.
