Provides basic breeding services to a variety of rodents being used for biomedical research. Performs duties from a weekly technical work list prepared by colony managers or higher team member which includes setting up breeding cages using a variety of different mating schemes, tail snip collection following established mouse identification procedures, observing and reporting animals for signs of illness, injury, and physical and behavioral changes. Restrains and handles animals for treatment. Maintain detailed animal records. Identifies incoming animals and houses them according to specific requirements. Packs outgoing animal shipments according to specific specifications. Rodent Models Breeding Core Database maintenance. Create Cage Cards for mating cages, wean cages, incoming orders and outgoing shipments. Sanititizes surgical and technical equipment, creates packs and ensures sterilization. Ensures the sterile packs in rooms are in date and replaced as needed. Performs euthanasia using carbon dioxide with cervical dislocation as a secondary method. Performs decapitation of newborn rodents after euthanasia with carbon dioxide. Prepares special diets and medications. Assisting Senior Technicians with Rodent Colony Management, attending meetings with Investigators and research staff, working with and understanding Punnett Squares, and other more technical or managerial work as designated by the Transgenic Breeding Colony Supervisors and Managers. Required to keep up to date on required training and SOP’s in Policy Manger and input their time worked using facility computers or assigned equipment during normal working hours. Ensure that Leave Request, OT, Weekend requests are submitted timely to area supervisor/manager via Time Clock Plus. Other duties as assigned.
