HBK Engineering, LLC is a fully licensed, professional engineering design firm headquartered in Chicago, IL with a staff approaching 700 individuals. About this Role HBK Engineering is seeking an experienced Transmission Design Engineer to join our rapidly growing team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of the energy transition, providing critical engineering and technical expertise on high-voltage overhead lines to major utilities across the Western United States. As a key member of the HBK Engineering family, this is more than a design role; it is a leadership position that combines day-to-day team management and mentorship with the high-level execution of complex utility projects. You will help us deploy creative and unique solutions to address a wide variety of complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience applying NESC, IEEE, ASCE, and ACI design codes to utility projects.
  • Mastery of PLS-CADD software is required, along with strong technology skills in the Office365 suite and remote communication platforms.
  • A proven ability to work independently or within interdisciplinary teams to complete large-scale projects.
  • The ability to come up to speed quickly on in-process projects and "hit the ground running" to meet client needs.
  • The persistence to see complex projects through to completion, combined with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A mindset that is adaptable to change in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in transmission design or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred, or the demonstrated ability to obtain licensure within 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Design engineering systems for overhead and subsurface utility projects in strict compliance with relevant specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare detailed engineering and construction documents utilizing industry-standard software tools including PLS-CADD, GIS systems, and client-specific enterprise asset management platforms.
  • Perform comprehensive structure and foundation design, conduct clearance checks, and provide material specifications and procurement recommendations based on analytical results.
  • Analyze information from supplementary data sources including topographical surveys, utility atlas information, field sketches, client records, and manufacturer equipment datasheets.
  • Independently manage your time and schedule to achieve critical project milestones while overseeing the delivery and execution of project work.
  • Perform field walkdowns with internal staff, clients, customers, governance authorities, and construction partners.
  • Provide vital technical guidance and mentorship to junior-level engineers to foster their professional development.
  • Facilitate and obtain proper permits and easements as required for project commencement and success.
