About The Position

This entry-level position works under the oversight of more experienced technicians and is responsible for assisting with the installation, maintenance, and testing of protective systems in high-voltage electrical substations. The role supports Substation Protection & Control operations and is designed to develop the skills needed to progress to higher classifications through a combination of classroom, home study, and on the job training. Job can be located in Earlington, Lexington, Pineville, or Danville, KY.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related technical field
  • Basic understanding of electrical fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with electrical hazards and safe handling of energized conductors.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and subtle differences in shape and size.
  • Willingness to work in various environments, including outdoor conditions and around high-voltage equipment.
  • Ability to climb, kneel, lift 50 lbs, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Aptitude for learning and applying new skills and technologies.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics and measurement systems (English and metric).
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related technical field.
  • Prior experience in substation protection and control functions.
  • Familiarity with relay testing software platforms such as Doble ProTest or ENOSERV RTS.
  • Understanding of communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, RS-485, Conitel, SEL).
  • Experience with Digital Fault Recorder software (e.g., Mehta Tech, Tesla ERLPhase).
  • Knowledge of NERC/SERC compliance and PRC asset identification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with scheduling, performing, and logging required testing of protection systems according to NERC compliance standards.
  • Support testing and troubleshooting of transmission equipment including potential transformers, current transformers, station batteries, DC circuits, circuit breakers, protective relays, communication systems, and test switches.
  • Learn and apply principles of three-phase power systems and Ohm’s Law.
  • Assist in calibrating and performing functional tests on microprocessor, solid-state, and electromechanical relays.
  • Help install, maintain, and troubleshoot digital fault recorders (DFRs), remote terminal units (RTUs), SCADA equipment, and power line carrier equipment.
  • Study and become familiar with electrical prints, switching diagrams, technical manuals, and maintenance/test procedures.
  • Operate company vehicles and equipment; maintain necessary licensing and certifications.
  • Participate in safety training and follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
  • Report damaged or defective equipment and hazardous conditions, correct issues within capability.
  • Compile information and generate reports, forms, and documentation as required.
  • Represent the company professionally in conduct, appearance, and attitude.
