About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while enroute to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Operates light and heavy equipment. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment. Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "N" endorsement.
  • Extensive knowledge of: Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance
  • Extensive knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of: Incident management procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Expert skill in: Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering
  • Proficient skill in: Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Proficient skill in: Maintaining a safe working environment
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Sitting - prolonged periods of time
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
