General Function: Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Full-time Transportation Assistant provides direct services and transportation to senior and disabled clients through the Project Linkage program. This position will work Monday through Friday. There may be some variance in scheduled work hours from time to time. Requirements

  • Must have current and valid driver license to operate motor vehicles in the driver’s state of residence
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the operation of passenger vans, minibus and other vehicles
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to safely operate a lift equipped 14 passenger minibus as well as ramp equipped minivans
  • Ability to drive vehicles safely in dense, urban areas, on narrow streets and in varied weather conditions
  • Ability to effectively read maps and understand street numbering systems
  • Ability to create efficient routes
  • Must be able to safely and regularly lift a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Must be able to consistently, regularly and safely bend, squat, stretch and maneuver to secure wheelchairs and motorized scooters in vehicles
  • Must have satisfactory vision and hearing to safely drive in urban environments and understand/address needs of clients while driving
  • Understanding of and desire to work with older adults and people with disabilities
  • Ability to work patiently with clients who are experiencing challenges with mobility, health, hearing, vision, and cognition
  • Demonstrated computer skills, ability to use Google Suite
  • Ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must have a clean driving record and have maintained a current driver license for a minimum of five years
  • Personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland Metropolitan area in a timely manner.
  • If driving a personal vehicle, must maintain a valid driver license for the state of residency, personal auto liability insurance coverage and a driving record permitting coverage under the agency auto liability policy.
  • MFS requires all employees and volunteers to complete a criminal background check.
  • Must also complete a Department of Motor Vehicles record check based on agency and program criteria.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience providing transportation to groups including older adults and/or persons with disabilities is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Provide a professional, safe and friendly transportation experience for older adults and people with disabilities for medical appointments, shopping and personal errands
  • Provide safe assistance to passengers with entry and exit from vehicles
  • Provide assistance and guidance to passengers for loading and unloading groceries, packages, wheelchairs, walkers, canes and other items as needed
  • Safely and accurately use an onboard data device for tracking trip data
  • Perform all pre and post trip vehicle inspections on a daily basis
  • Support all program vehicles with refueling needs as requested
  • Secure mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and motorized scooters, in vehicles as needed
  • Maintain cleanliness of vehicles when working
  • Ensure vehicles are safe for travel and notify office staff immediately regarding any concerns with vehicles
  • Provide assistance with vehicle maintenance needs, including driving vehicles to & from repair shop
  • Attend regular meetings with program team and Program Coordinator to review service delivery and identification of client needs
  • Provide information and referral support to clients as needed
  • Notify Program Coordinator immediately regarding any urgent needs or significant changes in a passengers status
  • Collaborate with program team in continuous improvement of service delivery
  • Attend all program staff meetings and other meetings as required
  • Successfully complete Mobility Awareness and Defensive Driving training every three years
  • Complete annual bloodborne pathogens training
  • Complete annual road tests
  • Comply with Metropolitan Family Service policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Effectively and consistently market the organization, communicating about MFS and its programs in a way that is both compelling and on message.
  • Follow marketing guidelines in place when communicating with staff, volunteers, clients, partners and potential supporters
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
