About The Position

The Graphic Arts Specialist II position within the City of Atlanta Department of Transportation's sign maintenance division is responsible for designing and creating signage for various maintenance purposes. This position falls under the classification of skilled technical staff and reports directly to the Installation Chief. The Graphic Arts Specialist II will also oversee a team of junior graphic artists.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, graphic design or a related field (Additional years of experience may be considered as a substitute for the required degree on an exceptional basis, with a minimum of seven (7) years of professional related experience in graphic design, drafting or related experience).
  • 3-5 years' of graphic design, drafting or related experience required.
  • The position requires one to have a commitment to deadlines and be open to flexible working hours.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and AutoCAD, with demonstrated experience in creating signage layouts and graphics.
  • Strong understanding of typography, color theory, and design principles, with the ability to create visually appealing and effective signage.
  • Knowledge of signage regulations, standards, and best practices, including familiarity with MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) guidelines and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements.
  • Experience in overseeing production processes for signage, including printing, cutting, and installation, with the ability to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to mentor and coach junior graphic artists, assign tasks, and manage workload priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with strong project management skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of materials and substrates used in signage production, as well as familiarity with sign fabrication techniques and equipment.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and professionalism in all aspects of signage design, production, and installation.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology and industry standards, continuously learning and improving skills to stay current in the field of graphic arts and signage production.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Design and create signage for transportation infrastructure maintenance purposes, including street signs, road markers, safety signs, and directional signage, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Utilize graphic design software and equipment to develop signage concepts, incorporating text, symbols, graphics, and colors to effectively communicate information to the public.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including maintenance supervisors, engineers, and project managers, to understand signage requirements and specifications for various maintenance projects.
  • Oversee the production process for signage, including printing, cutting, and installation, ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to project timelines.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior graphic artists, including assigning tasks, reviewing work, and providing feedback to facilitate skill development and professional growth.
  • Maintain an inventory of signage materials and supplies, monitor stock levels, and coordinating procurement as needed to support maintenance operations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of signage to assess condition and identify signs in need of repair, replacement, or maintenance, coordinating with maintenance crews as necessary.
  • Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements in graphic design and signage production, incorporating new techniques and technologies as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations in all aspects of signage design, production, and installation.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, such as city departments, contractors, and vendors, to coordinate signage projects and maintain effective communication throughout the process.
  • Participates in occurrences designated as “Emergency Events” by department Commissioner or Mayor in direct or expanded role.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
