About The Position

The Engineering Operations Lead Engineer will work with a team of professional, technical and administrative staff engaged in highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in transportation/traffic operations, Ensures that Signing Schematics are compliant with the Texas Manual of Traffic Control Devices, that speed zone requests are compliant with state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines and other Traffic Engineering assignments. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervised and assume direct accountability for the work product. This position offers the opportunity to influence statewide traffic safety initiatives and contribute to TxDOT's mission of connecting Texans with safe and reliable transportation solutions. Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, construction, transportation/traffic operations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • 8 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison with divisions, MPOs, cities, counties and other governmental entities concerning traffic management
  • Assist district and division personnel with statewide Emergency Operations Center (EOC) monitoring
  • Develops traffic engineering and traffic management system policies, procedures and standards.
  • Develop training courses and/or materials. Assists in directing the strategic planning process and implementing traffic safety program goals, strategies and objectives.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Reviews literature, technical data, material specifications and procedures.
  • Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.
  • Trains engineering staff.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
