About The Position

In collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director(s), Trauma Program Manager, PI Coordinator(s), and Trauma Clinical Nurse Coordinator the Trauma Outreach and Injury Prevention Coordinator will perform as an expert clinician to promote quality trauma care and outreach through the coordination and continual development of the outreach and injury prevention components of the Level 1 Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center (JMMTC). This position is responsible for identifying, establishing, and maintaining relationships with affiliated hospital's staff, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies, and communities throughout the WVU Medicine referral area. This individual will participate in trauma case review to evaluate pre-hospital care given and review compliance in conjunction with OEMS protocols and the trauma practice guidelines. The Trauma Outreach and Injury Prevention Coordinator will develop and implement educational, outreach and injury prevention offerings on all trauma projects involving the adult and geriatric population and will collaborate with the Pediatric Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator on pediatric and adolescent injury prevention, outreach and educational programs. This individual will have responsibility related to promotion of trauma standards of care according to nationally accepted American College of Surgeons (ACS) guidelines and to maintain compliance with the requirements for trauma verification at all levels such as the West Virginia States Designation as well as the ACS, and compliance with the WVOEMS office as well with focus on trauma outreach and injury prevention.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in allied health fields AND two years experience in trauma care OR Associate's degree in allied health field AND three years experience in trauma care.
Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Must possess tactful communication skills to be able to converse with staff, physicians, patients, families/caregivers, visitors, government agencies, outside facilities/agencies and the public.
Strong organizational skills and diligence.
Knowledge of relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings, as well as the application of the nursing process.
Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure.
Knowledge of various learner types and techniques to be able to present to a variety of audiences to promote quality patient care and injury prevention during
Experience in program development, teaching, and public speaking.

Nice To Haves

Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses, or appropriate state board where services will be provided, as a registered professional nurse OR current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN®), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN®), Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN®), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN®), Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN®) or equivalent advanced certification.
Obtain Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within 6 months of hire and TNCC Instructor certification within 1 year of hire.
Prior experience with Emergency Medical services or EMS protocols and processes.
Knowledge and ability to use various computer programs including the EMR (EPIC). Microsoft programs such as Word, Publisher, Excel, Teams, database management, and report writers.

Responsibilities

Coordinates/Collaborates with Trauma Program Manager (TPM) and the Trauma Medical Director (TMD), Associate Trauma Medical Director (ATMD), PI Coordinator(s), Trauma Research Coordinator(s), and Trauma Nurse Clinician in the development, implementation, distribution and/or presentation/delivery of outreach and educational programs/activities/symposiums/etc. for both healthcare providers and the community using appropriate educational strategies and materials in order to improve the quality of care of the trauma patient population and the wellbeing and safety of our community.
Maintain a relationship with referring hospitals and EMS agencies to provide follow-up on patient referrals timely, and develop education as needed to assist with process improvement of the severely injured patients as well as those in which issued were identified/discussed through rounding or the PI process.
Coordinate case audit and reviews with referring hospital staff and EMS agencies in the WVU Healthcare System referral area.
Assist with development and providing trauma related education programs for physicians, nurses, pre-hospital personnel, and allied health professionals as learning needs are identified via mail surveys, requests, site visits, course evaluations, and latest trends in the care of the trauma patient. Coordinate with CEOD and applicable agencies to ensure that CEUs/CMEs are provided for healthcare providers when applicable.
Coordinate and/or teach established educational programs including but not limited to Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) and Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC).
Coordinate and/or teach established injury prevention educational courses that address registry identified injuries within our state/WVU Healthcare System referral area. Assist in the assessment and evaluation of injury prevention needs, trends in trauma care delivery, and patient outcomes for the referral region to develop new educational and outreach as trends/data changes.
Establishes criteria to monitor the effectiveness of injury prevention and outreach programs, various educational programs for effectiveness.
Monitors applicable pre-hospital performance indicators and in collaboration with the Trauma Coordination team identifies and documents performance improvement issues related to pre-hospital care of the trauma patient and provides appropriate intervention with the providers to improve quality of care. Refers applicable quality of care issues to the appropriate pre-hospital services for performance improvement and offer education when applicable.
Assures compliance with approved study protocol(s) in the pre-hospital phase through education and on-going communication.
While representing WVU Healthcare and JMMTC in a variety of local and regional public and professional meetings continues to remain current on injury control issues and methodology by participating in programs offered by the Injury Prevention Research Center, the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Trauma Society as well as additional entities when applicable.
Ensures adequate documentation of the outreach and injury prevention activities to maintain compliance with trauma verification.
In collaboration with the Trauma Research Coordinator(s) and the Trauma Coordination team identifies and initiates contact with sources for funding of injury prevention replated projects, including project proposals and grant applications.
Reports trends and performance issues to the Trauma Medical Audit Committee and PI Committee during scheduled meetings.
Participates in the national trauma performance improvement program (TQIP) by collaborating with all Trauma Coordination team members and other key stakeholders to implement the annual Trauma PIPs Program plan.
