The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) or Nurse Practitioner is an integral part of the Orthopaedic Trauma team and provides patient care by examining patients for treatment, interpreting special tests, and directing treatment plans. This position is also responsible for emergency room and consult triage and assisting in surgery.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, ability to quickly learn enterprise and imaging systems, and similar computer applications.
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed or eligible to be licensed in the state of Colorado. Or certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Colorado.
  • Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Position requires acceptable motor vehicle driving history, valid and free from restrictions, and must have a valid driver’s license and appropriate vehicle insurance coverage. Ability to travel between all OCR locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior clinical and surgical orthopaedic experience, preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides orthopedic health care and performs selective medical and surgical services under the direction of OCR Physicians.
  • Records patient history, performs physical examinations, and records data.
  • Orders and interprets x-rays, special tests, laboratory and diagnostic studies.
  • Determines diagnoses, directs patient care plans, including prescribing medication.
  • Functions as a surgical first assistant.
  • Performs closed reductions and placement of traction pins.
  • Generates income for OCR by billing for surgical assist and hospital consults.
  • Takes trauma calls at area hospitals.
  • Maintains updated trauma census.
  • Performs rounds with attending physician and patient liaison.
  • Educates patients on orthopaedic services and clinic information; follows up if necessary.
  • Available for consults by Emergency Room Physicians and staff, or clinic providing independent assessment, treatment and minor procedures.
  • Provides continuous communication with on-call OCR Physician regarding emergencies and consults.
  • Ensures appropriate x-rays available to attending/trauma physicians for review on a daily basis.
  • Obtains all appropriate information on trauma patients and includes on the trauma line.
  • Obtains appropriate insurance data.
  • Helps coordinate weekend call.
  • Provides instructions/education to patients on prescribed medication and treatment plans.
  • Documents all patient encounters.
  • Dictates on all patients under treating physician’s name.
  • Communicates pertinent information to other departments when needed (i.e. scheduling, billing etc.).
  • Answers all pager calls as assigned.
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities and continuing education events.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and helpfulness toward patients, family members and others.
  • Ensures smooth and efficient telephone communication.
  • Is cooperative and helpful with co-workers and employees in other departments.
  • Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
