About The Position

The Traveling Excavator Operator is responsible for safely operating excavation equipment to support the installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic and utility conduit systems. This role works closely with construction crews to complete trenching, backfilling, and site preparation while maintaining strict adherence to safety and utility protection standards.

Requirements

  • Prior experience operating excavators in construction, utility, or telecom environments.
  • Experience working around underground utilities and fiber optic installations.
  • Ability to read site plans, utility locates, and construction drawings.
  • Strong awareness of job site safety and underground utility protection practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on physically demanding job sites.
  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred depending on project requirements).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on fiber optic or telecommunications construction projects.
  • Familiarity with 811 / utility locate systems (MissDig, One Call, etc.).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience working alongside directional drill crews or underground fiber crews.

Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators and other heavy equipment to perform trenching, digging, grading, and backfilling for fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Assist with underground utility installation, including conduit, vaults, handholes, and fiber pathways.
  • Follow locate markings and utility maps to prevent damage to existing underground utilities.
  • Work closely with drill crews, laborers, and supervisors to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations, safety guidelines, and company procedures.
  • Assist with site restoration, including grading and preparing surfaces after installation.
  • Maintain clear communication with crew members and supervisors while operating equipment in active job sites.
