About The Position

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY: Work Location: Wheeling Family Store Work Schedule: Part-time (up to 28 hours/weekly) This position is responsible for: Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Employees in this position must meet all DOT requirements for vehicles associated with this position at all times.
  • No formal education required AND Six (6) months of experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture; OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items; assists in navigating to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into the truck; packs items in the truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
  • Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  • Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unloads donations from the truck upon arrival at the warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Loads the truck with items to be taken to the dump.
  • Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.
