Truck Inspectors (QA Technicians) help Mercer keep our truck driver’s vehicles and trailers in compliance with Dept. of Transportation requirements. If you are considering becoming a Quality Assurance Technician, you might be wondering what exactly this position involves. What do Mercer Transportation Quality Assurance Technicians Do? Conduct vehicle safety inspections of new and used commercial motor vehicles in accordance with federal regulations and state law. You will ensure all trucks and trailers operated by our drivers are safe and Department of Transportation compliant. Job Expectations of a Quality Assurance Technician Technicians would be responsible for total quality and thoroughness of their vehicle inspections. Must be able and willing to work in diversified environments, such as cold, heat, or wind and gain general knowledge of vehicle components. You are expected to work within a system designed to handle drivers from the orientation process through the duration of their contract with Mercer regarding inspections. This system often requires the management of hundreds of truckers a year and working with our recruiters through orientation and maintaining paperwork in the drivers’ files. Interpersonal Skills and Knowledge a Quality Assurance Technician Should Know As a Quality Assurance Technician, you must be able to follow instructions and maintain logical follow-through on all projects. The ability to stay organized with materials and time is essential. The need for organization is due to the nature of managing many different projects and people at once. You will resolve most maintenance issues by taking independent actions and calculated risks without supervision. One of the most critical skills is the ability to efficiently answer and respond to questions regarding projects and promptly respond to customer needs. You must possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills used to effectively convey information with a clear understanding to others. Also, you should develop an in-depth understanding of the truck-driving industry and remain current on truck maintenance, DOT safety regulations, systems and procedures. As a Quality Assurance Technician, you should seek opportunities to improve processes and implements creative solutions.
