About The Position

Tutor students in various Mathematics courses taught in Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assist students with computer software, web-based homework platforms, and calculator skills necessary for the courses, help with problem solving skills required in Mathematics, and other duties as requested by the supervisor. - Willing to work afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.

Requirements

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of college level Calculus 2.
  • Requires basic skill set and proficiency.
  • Conducts work assignments as directed.
  • Closely supervised with little latitude for independent judgment.
  • Must be able to help with computer programs and online homework platforms.
  • Good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience is required.
  • Ability to explain concepts and solve word problems in Mathematics, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting

  • Prior tutoring experience.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students through drop-in, by-appointment, and/or semester-long tutoring (online and/or in-person) in subjects, skills, or content deemed appropriate by the relevant supervisor
  • Build rapport and supportive relationships with students.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources within the relevant resource center and larger Academic Resource Center.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources outside the relevant resource center/Academic Resource Center with consultation/direction from the relevant supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records, adhering to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and keeping appropriate staff updated on student progress and problems.
  • Assist in the daily activities of the center, cover the front desk when needed, ensure students are checked in/out, and help maintain a positive, clean, and organized center space.
  • Assist students with computer systems/software and help students troubleshoot computer problems as they impact tutoring operations.
  • Use the appropriate scheduling system to manage and maintain tutoring schedules.
  • Participate in mandatory center training and other campus-wide training opportunities as appropriate.
